So I am new here and wanted to say hello. I am posting here first because this thread is where I want to show my build. I have never cut and welded a bike before but since I started tearing it down, I have been addicted.
The title is on its way to a workmate that didn't want it anymore because he didn't have the time to make it nice again, so he sold it to me for $150.00
The bike is a 1980 xj 650 I believe. I have only ever owned Yamahas. My first being a 1976 xs360, than an 84 virago now this. In a few weeks I am picking up a xs400 that I will do a full restore on. (buying that for $200)

So once I got this bike home I stripped the tins off along with all the lighting. The next day, more break down. Airbox came out along with the speedo and tach. Cone exhaust is also laying in the scrap pile.

Being thast it is shaft drivin left me wondering what to do. I did not want to cafe this, I wanted a bobber style. So I thought about it for a whole 30 minutes than introduced it to Mr. Sawzall. I cut the rearend off and made a cut where the backbone attaches behind the seat. Than I put a rachet strap from top to bottom to pull my seat steel lower. And that is where I am now. only thing I have done since was cut my tin to fill in where my battery box will go.

As soon as I get my hands on a welder this thing will than keep moving forward.

I'm looking forward to meeting some of you and maybe seeking help from ya if needed as well..
    Thanks for looking..Enjoy..CHEERS

Before you throw anything away. Please offer it here for sale there are some guys looking for mufflers and turn signals and such. Otherwise keep up with the mods. You'll need to look at xj4evers rejeting for pod and exhaust mods.

ummm, before you weld anything up, make sure the rear wheel is true, its a little late for a jig but you will be glad you took the extra time to do it. otherwise you will have plentiful issues down the road, you cannot depend on the swingarm to keep her in line especially since it looks like it will be moved a little bit before you weld. also gussett the joints, just do a search for it here if you dont know what I mean. i have chopped many a bike and those are some things i learned the hard way.

and......VERY IMPORTANT! disconnect the tci and regulator before you weld.

good luck and keep the pics coming,

great guys , thanks Daniel. I was already going to gusset like crazy. But didn't think it would be out of whack so Ill make sure I'm square and true.

I just ordered my grips and cones last night and am on the search for my late 60's Harley headlight housing. I wasn't going to put anything Harley on it. But that big chunk of old aluminum gets me going.
