I just bought a 82 650 seca and i cant get it to start. I pulled a plug to see if its getting fire and its not. I pulled the plug wire off the coil and im not getting any fire out of my coil either. New to the street bike thing so I need LOTS of help. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is it just the one plug or all four of them? If its alll 4 the first thing to do is check your safety switches and kill switch....

All four. I checked the coils with a circuit tester probe with a light and they are getting 12v in but nothing out. I also checked the TCI it gets 12v in on the small plug but nothing out on the lsrge plug. Help

You need a manual with a wiring diagram first. I suspect the side stand saftey circuit is faulty. Its a common problem.

If the side stand safety circuit is bad whould that kill fire or prevent the motor from cranking? The motor will crank like a champ, just with no fire.

There may still be a problem in the saftey circuit. Disconect the saftey wire at the plug canector for the TCI(Black wire with white stripe I think, check wiring diagram to be sure). That will eliminate the saftey circuit for sure.

Check TCI voltage when cranking it should not be less than 10V. Read voltage between Red and black wires at the TCI plug.

Ohm the pick-up coils, check manual to see what the range is.

Ohm the ignition coils primary and secondary. 3 ohms primary, 10K secondary. Refer to manual for exact specs.

If all those check good then your TCI is bad.

This is gonna sound stupid but: The safety wire at the plug connector of the TCI.. Which plug 4 wire side or 5 wire side?
TCI voltage again on which plug 4 wire(little) or 5 wire (big)
    Pick up coils...located where?
Ignition coils primary is red wire white stripe in right but secondary is what spark plug wires?
Sorry if i sound like a complete moron but electrical is not my game and this is my first bike.
    Thanks a bunch:)

I looked at a wiring diagram an here is what I came up with.
    There are 2 TCI plugs
    1st
    Black- common to pick-ups
    Gray -pick-up #1
    Orange - -pick-up #2
Black/white stripe - saftey circuit dissable

    remove plug from TCI and check resistance from;
    Black to gray
    Black to orange
these should be about the same, check the manual for exact specs
black/white stripe to frame , this should be open if you can read low resistance here thats your problem

    plug #2
    black - ground
gray - ground to ignition coil #1
    red/white stripe - 12v +
orange - ground to ignition coil #2

when checking voltage to the TCI read between red/white and black
    unlplug and check resistance between;
    red/white and gray
    red/white and orange
each should read anound 3 ohms, these are the primary side of the coils
pull the spark plug wires off and remove the caps they just unscrew to remove. It might als help to mark them before removing so you can put them back in the same place. There are 2 coils with 2 wires each, cylinders 1 & 4 for one coil and 2 & 3 for the other. read the resisance from #1 to #4 this is the secondary side. It should be around 10K ohms, do the same for #2 & 3 wires.

Hope my babbling helps, it would be helpfull if you had a manual. I explains the procedure in more detail.

Yep, you have carb servicing to do now. What was the problem with ignition?

I pulled the black wire with the white stripe from the TCI connector(safety wire i think) and it started firing. I pulled the carbs out and cleaned them some what but one of the diaphrams on the slides is cracked right on the edge where it seats into the little ring. it looks like it seals up fine when the carb hat is installed but am i gonna have to replace the whole thing?

Ok, i rigged up a gas tank(mine has a whole in it) and rode the bike yesterday. It idles like a champ and takes off good and strong up till about 4 grand in revs and then it starts sputtering and missing. Doesent matter which gear your in when it hits 4 grand it sputters. Is this a spark issue or a fuel issue? thanks

A hole or leak in a diaphram will cause missfire at a certian rpms. Some here have had sucess patching them. I have tried but it usually come off after awhile. Fixing those is a good starting point.
It still couls be a problem with the ignition but most likley fuel related, either from slide diaphrams or jetting.

You can get aftermarket replacement diaphragms for the 650s for under $30 now; it's no longer necessary to replace the whole slide assembly.
