I have a solo seat that is made to use with springs, but I'm using shocks so I think seat springs would be redundant. Anyone know the best way to mount the seat with no springs?

you will have to custom build mount points for it that keep it at the correct angle. you will also want to pin it so that it can be flipped out of the way to get to the fuse and air boxes.

How can you pin it down if all there is are the short threaded bolt things in the bottom of the seat?

front attaches with a hinge bracket

rear with a 2 piece bracket. One gets attached to the studs on the seat, one welded on the bike. hook the 2 together with a pinned rod so it can be easily removed.

Im going through the same thing right now, been tossing different ideas around with none settling yet. Although, i did mount a front hinge today thats ok except for the bolt propping the hinge up more than id like. Im more confused by the rear mount as my bolts from the seat line up just behind the rear bar, and right in the corners. Thingking of some sort of corner triangle platform so i can make some rubber thingies set flat on it. Idk though. Been a pain. Wanna just buy a damn kit haha

Post some pics of what you have so far, easier to see where the problem lies and make suggestions than to guess how you have it attached.

I hear you on wanting to buy a kit. So did you make your own bracket and hinge and use the tank mounting bolt or something different? I just got my seat in the mail and I keep the bike at my grandparents garage so I haven't been able to test fit it to see where the back bolts line up. Definitely think some rubber would be good to absorb some of the vibration.

:p Generally the way I mount a seat, is I approach from the left side of the bike. While grasping the left handle bar grip., I raise my right leg. I grasp my foot around my ankle, and carefully swing my leg over the rear of the bike so as not to scuff the surfaces. Once my leg is clear of the bike, I release hold of my ankle, and rotate my body into position, and firmly plant my posterior on the seat completing the mounting procedure.

Now mind you, this is only for motorcycles and horses. Other...ahem...bodies that require mounting necessitate and entirely different process.

actually i just used a small(er) t-hinge from home depot used to mount doors or something, all i had to do was drill a hole directly in the center as the holes were like idk just on the end, and another weird spot. had plenty of room.. used a few washers and a bolt underneath the hinge on the seat part and then another washer on the outside of it with the original screws for the seat. also had to drill a hole in the center to use with the tank mount bolt. i put some grommets in there and used teh original rubber tank insulator thing. works awesome! i can open it enough to get what i need but i like that it doesnt open any further. it props up about 6 inches. for the back i just went with superglued rubber puck looking things. they sort of cushion the ride and also provide nice stabilizing features. would like to clean that up a bit but really for less than 10 bucks, i am pretty happy about it. i can post some pics later when i get home

Unless I'm missing something here (REAL possible), is the front mount tight enough to keep the seat from moving when shifting your weight???

it is for me. im only 5'4" and like 140lbs so im not that big. plus, its secured in a way snug to the tank so the front cant really move, that part helps a lot, i think.

on my 85 i used an U bracket that fit inside the solo seat mount that came with the seat. drilled a hole in the U bracket and mounted it like you have your hinge to the bolt that holds the tank on.

I has a little movement and I ultimately plan on running a piece of metal tubing inside the "U" to help sturdy it up. I also need to redrill my hole for the seat bolt as it's slightly oversized.

    (if that all makes sense)

    Tip of the day:
If using Chrome as browser (and you should): Just right-click the large image and select "open image in new tab". It will then size to the browser window (unless you click it again to zoom in). Might work the same way in other browsers.
Otherwise, just right-click the images and save them on your computer/phone/whatever. Open them in any program/browser should display them at a viewable size.

And webofdeception, thanks for taking the time to share the images, we sure appreciate the effort! Don't let it scare you that people want more from you. ;) This is infinity better than no pictures at all!
