    Mike,

She doesn't need to be a Midnight Special. She is what she is and that's all she needs to be. Like you said..you like her and that's all that really matters. I know you are joking but for real...they're all nice bikes.

I think everyone reaches for a 6th gear now and then in the hopes that it will have magically appeared.

edit: except of course for the 550s that do have a 6th gear

Looks like a nice runner. As long as you are happy that's all that counts.

It looks like that valve cover's never been off. The valves should have been checked at 3000 miles and again every 5000 thereafter.

How many miles on the bike? If they've been neglected you could be running on the edge of disaster.

I wanna see more pics of the chevelle peekin out the corner!

    Nice max too!

question - what kind of paint did you use on the badges?

    As well as:

-Were they on the bike when you painted them?
-How did you prep the badges?
-What did you apply the paint with?

    Looks real nice.

Also, the exhaust manifold bolts - are those aftermarket? from where?
    - Need to get some but dont want to pay shipping and do a whole order through len just for some silly bolts, lol

I used an automotive cast iron colored paint. Looks like it was repainted black with the badges still on. I do need to find a side cover for the right side as it did not come with one.

I did nothing to prep them, just sprayed some in a small container and used a small paint brush to paint it on.

Bolts came with the bike and are inside/out hex

    what brand paint?

heres a link to the valve job:

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1 ... art=0.html

The tool you need is here: http://www.powersportsuperstore.com/Mot ... lick=35177

    And:

    - a simple pair of hemostats - i pulled mine outta my tacklebox to use.
-Small non magnetic flathead screwdriver to pop the shims up - cheap

Dave F has a shim pool, just a deposit less 5.00 for shipping and he'll get you the shim's you need in trade of the ones that you pull out of your bike.

Chacal(len) has the valve cover gasket as well as donuts.

Did you do the rear brake?

    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1 ... art=0.html

    Good luck!

Is there anyway to change the gear in the shaft to make it higher gearing? What about one from other XJ, XS Bikes?

    Chris.

I haven't heard any way of re-gearing them. But a common mod on the 750 Maxim is to take the rear wheel from a 750 Seca and put it on there. Maxim wheel is a 130-90-16" and the Seca has a 18" rear. So the bigger tire gives you a little lower revs at highway speeds. No idea if it works on other bikes. But that one in the pic is a 750, so if he wants to do it...I'm sure there's a Seca wheel out there. You do lose a little bit on the jump off the line, of course, that's the nature of the thing.

Oh, and if I can be very very picky for a second, not trying to be a jerk. But the Special and the Maxim are two different bikes, both of which had a "Midnight" version. So even if yours was a "Midnight" it would be a "Midnight Maxim" not a "Midnight Special."

Thank you very much for the info. So far, this is what I'm looking for.
I had no idea the Maxim 750 and Seca 750 where so much different.
    Thank you,
    Chris.

Would it not be easier to change the front sprocket by say two teeth. I did this on one of my previous rides when even in sixth gear, i was always looking to change up. Worked wonders on the open highway.

    Pmjydnl,

I think your thinking of a chain drive bike like 550. This one we are talking about is a shaft drive.
The only way to change the rear end gearing would be to know for sure what bikes had for gear ratio's so you could swap with that bike. This is a good question for Len xj4ever to see if he knows or knows someone who has documented gear ratio's for XS & XJ bikes

You are absolutely right. Need to get my head around the Shaft Driven concept. All my prefvious and current rides (except for the XJs) are chain driven.

82 and 83 xj750 maxim use the same side cover

red color changed between years but it won't matter for your bike.

Only 750 Maxim has that side cover with aluminum around edge. No, they aren't that cheap. I paid $50 for the battery cover. Wait for a member to make a bobber and buy it off them. Or look at ebay, they pop up on there. I saw one at a parts place here in Portland, he wanted $45 so that's about the going rate.

Oh, I misspoke, now that I think about it, XJ1100 has similar side covers, but different shape (more of an acute angle) so won't work anyway. I went without one for a while. Was about to give up and fab something up, maybe diamond plate, but finally got one.

Good luck on that bike, nice to see a 750. Sometimes it seems like everyone on here has a 650 Seca (not that there's anything wrong with that;) )

I was looking at a 650 and called my friend who had this 750, to ask him how he liked his Maxim, next thing I knew I had bought his 750 for $600
