Met with a gentleman this morning who works with fiberglass.
Currently he uses fiberglass on boat work and go cart racers.
He stated that he has worked with fiberglass for 60 some-odd years.

Just wanted to ask the board of who would be interested in fiberglass covers, and at what price would they be willing to spend.
I may persue this if there is enough interest.

The pricing would have to be close to the ebay price for, and be identical to the real thing.

550 Seca right sidecovers are the most sought after and most difficult to find for some reason. New from Yamaha they run $94. Salvage yards get away with $60-$70. eBay price is usually around $60, sometimes for one, sometimes a set. I would say the price would depend on how EXACTLY they would match, dead-nuts including mounting ears, etc., could go for $60-$65 without any problem. "Good looking silhouette" but not exact match might fetch $30-$40 but I wouldn't think anything beyond that.

i was actually just talking with my brother last night about doing this. He has been working with foam sheeting designing an radio controlled plane. Anyway, the sheeting he has is very easy to work with and i got the idea of making a side panel and covering it in fiberglass to make it rigid. Can you even buy sheets of fiberglass and resin to do this with? other than side panels, you could maybe make some pretty cool things if this method would work.

It CAN be done and quite easily; whether or not it proves to be cost-effective is another question. Quite simply, a mold would have to be made from an original sidecover and then the replicas simply laid-up in the mold and then trimmed to shape. Trying to reproduce them by making individual "positive" replicas wouldn't work, at least in any quantity.

im talking about making more or less a custom side panel. I have little interest in replicating stock side panels or making them in any quantity other than just for my bike. Wait, i think this thread is in danger of being hijacked....

I intend to make a left side panel for the Kawasaki 550 project I am into, sometime down the line.
My M.O. will be to form the shape from M.D.F. then take a plaster of paris "squeeze" from that, to use as the G.F. mould.

I've always wanted a belly pan for my 900, and I believe it would also fit 750's and 650's and with minor trimming (?) fit 550's. I was going to make a mold and offer them for sale- - unpainted- - for around $100.
A belly pan is about twice the material as side covers.
Mine would be a unique shape- - not a copy.
Aren't there copywright infringements in "splashing" an original part Mr Fault???

It would depend entirely on the quality of the reproduction. I'd buy a good repop for about $60 no problems at all.

There would be but the way around that is for the part to differ SLIGHTLY from the original and be clearly labeled as a reproduction. Since the originals were made out of some early manifestation of ABS-like plastic I don't think there'd be any possibility of confusing fiberglas reproductions with the "real thing."
