I am rebuilding my front forks on the xj700 and would like to know how much oil goes into the forks. Forks were nasty inside, but not too much wear. Just need to know the amount. Thanks

The Yamaha factory service manual specs it at 389cc, or 13.7 Imp oz, or 13.2 US oz.

10Wt Yamaha Fork & Shock Oil or equivalent fork oil.

This option may be possible, but it's far from desirable. Fork oil is available in different weights, though, for different damping dynamics. Fork oil has much better properties relating to foaming, shear rate, and consistency in damping properties.

Another strong argument for the proper use of fork oil is in its Viscosity Index (VI) The VI reflects the relationship of a lubricant's viscosity at a given temperature. Higher VI is better:
    -- Standard motor oil: 110-120
-- Premium synthetic motor oil: 150-160
    -- Fork & shock oil: 200+

    FWIW.

It's always the same amount, regardless of weight. Yamalube is showing 10wt and 20wt, but there may be others available. Different models of our bikes use slightly differing amounts.

Because fork oil is motorcycle-centric, best bet is bike shops and dealerships. The big names in auto parts may carry limited stocks of bike products.

    Yamaha's Yamalube products:

I finished rebuilding them. Fairly simple once you make the special tool. I used 15w fork oil. I purchased from the stealership. Thanks for the information on the amount. Helped out a lot.

I used a piece of 3/4 rod bent at a 90 degree angle and the welded a 2/4 bolt to it. I believe that the head of the bolt was 7/8 Lots of leverage. Worked great. Took 2 hours to do the first one and about 15 minuts to do the second. Nastiest oil I have seen in a while came out of there.
