I have a 86 xj 700 ....well the other day I put to much oil in it and didn't find out till about 15 miles away when I got home and saw it leak in though the intake box well it was running fine till I went out to mess with it I pulled the tubes goin from the intake to the carbs and there's oil sitting in the carbs right there....? Well I cleaned that off now I cant keep the bike started unless its on choke and most of the time it won't at all unless I have Carb cleaner sparying in it??? Should I pull the carbs and clean them? I'm pretty sure they all have oil inside them

I reckon you should clean the plugs and air intake area, including the airbox to remove the oil. Paper towels, rags etc etc.

I don't think oil would end up in the bowls but if it did it ought to be suitably thinned out by the fuel eventually.

After a bit of running it ought to clean out if you remove the excess.

Who doesn't love a smokey motorcycle!

Check to see if the air filter is oil-soaked as well.

Well I did all that cleaned the inake and filter and plugs but it will only stay stared a min or 2 ,,,then it won't start back up unless I put my hand over the Carb holes? But when it does start up after a few seconds the bike will bog down,? Could y'all point me in the direction of what it might be

Throw a fresh set a spark plugs in there. Your plugs could be fouled even if they look clean. Cheap & easy insurance. Also, X2 what Time says about the air filter. Let us know how you're doing after these things.

I took spark plugs out and cleaned them but I didn't replace them yet,,,I can only get it to stay started without the Carb spary,,,, I cleaned the spark plugs fuel filter even took the carbs all the way off and cleaned them to ..it sounds like to me its. Not getting enough gas but its flowing through the filter and in to the carbs? I took the air filter off sparyed it with cleaner and took my compresser and blew it out dry ...I don't under stand it was running great until it started shooting oil up in the intake? Any thought will help

If the spark plugs got saturated they will no longer fire. If you "cleaned" them with spray contact cleaner you have killed them. The ceramic gets saturated (with either gas, or spray cleaner) and the plug is effectively dead. It may dry out in a couple of weeks, or never.

    Replace the spark plugs.

A whole bunch of things happen when you blow a bunch of oil back into the airbox...filter saturates, as said, plugs foul, the little wells and pickup tubes that supply fuel to the engine when starting are probably full of it, and it's too thick in there to let it draw fuel to start on, carb slides may have enough oil on them they can't move right, etc....

    1. Fitz told ya. Replace the plugs.

    2. If the filter got wet with oil, replace it. Nothing will clean it out. If you used cleaner on it, it's definitely shot now. They are resin-impregnated paper, you use anything strongly solvent on them and it makes the resin flow...into the pores...and plugs them up. It may look clean, but be completely non-porous now.

    3. If you can get it to run with new plugs and the filter removed, spraying through the carbs with cleaner may help, as far as cleaning film off the slides and getting it out of the starting circuit...but if not, you'll have to pull em and clean them out...

The plugs you can get from any auto parts store. Should have them in stock. The filters for your bike they can usually get, but have to get them from the warehouse so next day usually, unless you request it real early and they can get it on the afternoon run.

Best to look up the proper part numbers yourself in common brands (like NGK for plugs and Wix for filters)...because they aren't used to looking at bike listings or may not have them, and often get the wrong thing...if you have common part numbers, they can cross them to something they carry, even if they don't have that particular brand.
