They'll do it from internal arcing across plates when they get real low on water, exposed plates and too much empty volume for hydrogen sulfide gas...surprised you don't see it in motorcycles more...

I actually got to see one go, just happened to be looking the right way at the right time at a gas station...gal got in her Honda Accord, hit the key and BOOM. Actually lifted the corner of the hood a bit when it went. Battery looked about like the one pictured...

Concentrated hydrogen really likes to explode. In most explosions or even burning fuels you are witnessing hydrogen igniting-i.e. gas is a combo of hydrocarbons.

Obviously this is why you are always told to be careful around batteries. As the explosion would be bad, but being sprayed with conc. sulfuric acid would be worse.

Polock did the acid eat anything around it?

Whoa. Scary. Especially as my battery "died" when I was out of town and not ridden the xj in over 3 weeks. Jump started with car once to ride to friends house. Pulled battery to put in charger, and noticed there was literally 1/2" of "acid"/water in the bottom of the battery :O

Added some distilled water till it was at "max" and then charged it overnight/till it was full #autoshutoff

Haven't checked it since, but has since have ridden frequently.

This thread makes me want to check it 8O

When I worked at a alternator rebuild shop, my boss was checking out a car. He was standing near the battery and asked the owner to crank the car, BOOM. Sounded like a shotgun blast, blew acid all over the car and my boss including the eyes. That's why it's good to have emergency eye wash stations and a shower stall at work.
