Hey everyone, I had a long 3.5 hour ride back to home yesterday from a buddys house, when i put my bike into gear its smooth as it always was but when i start to take off its like the chain is grinding with the sprocket from having probably 2 or more inches of slack in it. Im assuming the chain is from 82 when the bike was put out. your thoughts?

What's to think? If the sprockets are worn, replace the chain and sprockets as a set. If not adjust the slack out of the chain. If you can't move the rear axle back far enough to get the chain adjusted properly, then replace the chain.
Chains stretch, which is why the rear axle has adjusters.

sprockets are fine, just alot of slack in the chain and the tensioners are already tightened ill probalby just remove a link or so out of the chain because im getting ready to stretching it 12 inches so i dont wanna have to buy a 2 new chains

Be careful. I had a Honda with a stretched chain...I ignored it, next owner almost ate the big one when it broke, wrapped the hub and locked the wheel. On the highway...

Just replace the chain. Taking out a link won't keep it from snapping... A temporary measure, sure, but don't count it as 'fixed' until it's replaced.

Actually the chain doesn't stretch. The loose part is worn rollers and the tight bit is unworn rollers. In other words....uneven wear usually due to poor lubrication ...

Replace BOTH sprockets when you replace the chain, or the new chain will quickly wear out.

Our resident parts source, XJ4Ever can set you up with a set of sprockets and a chain for not a lot of money.

PM member chacal, click on the logo/link in the site banner at upper right, or send an email to "info AT XJ4ever DOT com" with your bike info.

As far as re-gearing, it would help if we knew what bike we're talking about. In general, I wouldn't recommend it, other than running a 45T rear sprocket if you happen to have an early 550 that came with a 46T.

As for sprocket wear, you can't SEE it until it becomes extreme. The test is to grasp a pin in the chain at the 3 o'clock position on the sprocket and pull it straight rearward as shown below. If this exposes more than 1/2 of the adjacent sprocket teeth, then the chain AS WELL AS THE SPROCKETS are worn out and need to be replaced.
