please help me guys,im new to this site, and also new to xj bikes,i have a 1981 xj 650 maxim, hondas were my passion, but i love my xj! lol, anyhow heres what ive got...ive takin the carbs apart and cleaned them thoroughly,i replaced the intake boots, and gaskets, and vacume caps. and it has new float needles, i have four nto one exhaust andpod airfilters, sence ive cleaned the carbs and replaces the boots and gaskets, it now will not hardly run...do i need to start with a carb sync an go from there? i know the main and pilot jets have been changed but i didnot do it. it has 118main and 40 pilot! somone told mne that it probly needs to be synced and rejetted because of the new part what do u think?

Do yourself a favor and get a service manual.

    Wet set your floats
    Bench sync
Read xj4ever's info on resetting for your mods

+1 to the above. You need a service manual.

CHECK AND ADJUST THE VALVE CLEARANCES.

    Wet set the floats

    Bench sync

    Vacuum sync

PODS are notorious for tuning problems. I personally recommend getting the bike running with the original airbox and air filter if you still have them. This allows you to work out any underlying gremlins BEFORE you do mods like PODS. I recently went through hell changing to an aftermarket exhaust and ended up scrapping the $400 exhaust for a used stock one off another bike for the sake of having my bike run well.

I know there are guys who have had success with PODS and the 4-into-1 systems, but I personally won't change out any of the original 'pneumatics' (airbox, air filter, exhaust, carbs) due to the tuning nightmare I have had with JUST the exhaust swap. (at least, not until I order my Carbtune and Colortune plug from Len this month).

It takes a lot of patience, time, and work to get certain mods to work, and PODS tend to be one of those 'love 'em or hate 'em' mods.

That's my $0.02 on the matter. Good luck, and keep posting updates. That's how I got my bike from 'scrap' to beautifully running.

I'd go through the xj4ever store and read through the info Chacal has there to verify if your jets are around nominal values for the intake/exhaust set-up you have.. This is off the top of my head, but I remember seeing something along the lines there somewhere. Definitly clean, set floats, and bench sync, then fine sync carbs all after a valve check of course!

    Good Luck.

Thanks for all the help!! I was in the process of bench syncing the
Carbs and I've noticed to tiny holes, which hole is the butterfly's supposed to almost but not completely cover? Looking in the carbs would it be the
Upper or lower hole that I'm adjusting them to?

The only way is to wet set them to the right level and forget the dry measurement method.
