Ok, I got an '82 xj1100. firing on 2 and 3, but not on 1 and 4. coil is good, switched everything and it goes fine. Ignition unit checks out. is there something im missing? or do i need to strip off the tape and look for broken wires?

Multimeter FTW! Get the wiring diagram out and check the continuity of the wires back to the TCI.

Then it would normally be the crimps on the ends where any OCs occur.

Of course if there is no OCs then you probably have a bad TCI or bad pickup coil or...

What are the chances that the tci box has failed? And is there a good way to test it?

X2 its a bad wire somewhere, very unlikely that the tci failed on one channel, you could find out easily by switching the coil plugs but i think its a failed connection

Ok. wires all check out. Come to find out, the previous owner was a electrical engineer and may have repaired the TCI once. FML
