changing wheels

Hi there, can anyone please suggest or comment on ways of changing out the stock mags on a 82 xj550.

I have found a few threads that mention you can use a xs400 on the 19inch. is this possible.

I was hoping i could replace the front wheel with this 79 xs400 wheel

 

It will probably work.

Seca 550s have straight-spoked rims, the front from one of them would fit for sure.

The Seca 550 and 550 Maxim have different rear brakes though; you'd need to use the whole assembly if you use a 550 Seca wheel on the rear.

 

Cheers for that... I really like the Xs400 type mag wheel. However I've since figured out that it only comes in an 18inch and are after 19.

Do you know of any other method to change it to this style of mag.

I think I've seen an xj750 or may have been an Xs something that had the same sort of Mag... Would or could this work if you changed the whole front set up.


I'm new to all this but it would be so handy if someone could explain how one could change the stock mag wheels. I've searched the net and haven't come up with much. Surely there is a way you can change the stock wheels....

 

Your bike is lookin' NICE! I know lots of folks don't care for 'em but if you're gonna have to have mags I like the swirly ones that came on our bikes...

Of course there is.

MOST of these bikes had VERY similar front wheel hubs, thankfully.

I did a little Google Image searching, and there are a number of 1978~79 model XS's that used that style of mag wheel. Anything from a 500<up should have a 19" instead of the 18" that came on the 400s. I know the SR500 did.

You will most likely need to use your brake rotor, and play "mixy-match" with axles and spacers; but it's unlikely that you would need to swap the whole front end. You will need to pay close attention to what you're doing.

What ever wheel you find, try to get the front axle and spacers with it. I have a feeling you'll end up with your original axle and MAYBE the spacers from the transplanted wheel; but try to have everything on hand.

 

XS750/850 should have that wheel in a 19 front

Putting an 18 inch front in means it will steer a little quicker, I have run a XJ550 at the track with that set up

 

Thanks for that guys. I will try source something locally then that is of the type you mentioned. I've found a few on eBay but because I live in NZ the shipping costs x3 times as much as the wheel haha

This is my first bobber project and are also new to bikes so are learning more and more as I go.

Once I get the right wheels I'm gunna try seek advice on where to find some cleaner brake and clutch controllers... Trying to slim it down
