We just put some Shinko whitewalls on my brother's XJ650 (1982) The left side of the tire is just kissing the swingarm. And we dont want to ruin the look of the whitewall. Is there a way to adjust the swingarm to the left a hair. The Haynes manual I have is not exactly clear on this.

As a a regular adjustment. No.

    But.
The spacer that sits between the wheel, and final drive inside of the drive flange is what sets the spacing on the rear wheel. You could use a slightly longer spacer here if necessary.

Just be aware that this could make the rear wheel off center, and may affect the handling of the bike.

Also the shoulder on the rear axle shaft will need to be adjusted to match.

What's the tire size. 130/90/16 is the largest that will work on a Maxim, so if it's wider than 130, that would be your problem.

130-90-16 is the size, that's not the problem.

There's a weld on the swingarm that can be ground down a little, that might be all you need.
    Worked for me

There was also someone a while back that had cut out the center of the "bump-in' and welded a flat piece in closere to the driveshaft. That would add some room and maintain the structural stability..........

But any way you look at it, there technically not enough room "to go larger" without some work.

Since we are using stock sized tires, I would have expected them to fit.

Some manufacturers have wider crowns (where the side wall meets the tread). This is the first instance I've heard of a 130 series rubbing. I'm with Hogfiddles & Polock on the grinding.

Post a couple of pics so we can see how close, also, when you put the wheel back on did you put the spacers that were there back in the right sequence.
We've had people post on here before asking why the axle would not tighten up, or the wheel was binding etc.
Could be just a wrong or missing spacer.
    2 cents.

Spacers are good. Wheel doesn't bind. Its just touching ever so slightly. Just enough to scuff the tire
