Tues August 28th I was on my way to class when another driver going the opposite direction made a left hand turn in front of me ans i hit his rear quarter panel and flew over his trunk coming to a stop on the asphalt. a truck in the middle turning lane had stopped to let him through and i didn't see him until it was to late.

so for now its time to say goodbye until i find another XJ. Thanks for all the help guys and safe travels.

Glad your ok. You experienced the best possible worst experience. I have personally witnessed two other riders doing the exact same thing, that is hitting the rear quarter and doing a 'vault' over and back onto their rearend. If you hit a vehicle straight on in the back or front, here is a fair chance you will impact the windshield which will always hurt far worse than a catapult to your posterior.

Turn lanes are also notorious for causing accidents, especially when drivers start waving other drivers to go...they often don't realize there is other traffic in the other lane, and the waved driver has surrendered personal control if they follow direction which is often a bad idea.

It's nice to hear that you aren't scared to ride now. Hope you find a new to you XJ soon and get back with us.

God I hate this! On my bike and in my car both. Even on foot. People need to stop this. I used to drive all day long for a living, and it's the one thing that would set me over the edge. People who think they're being nice and waving me out when it's their damn turn! YOU have the right of way, take it! Then I'll go, the way it's supposed to work. Usually it makes me think the person waving people out is some kind of control freak. I know it makes me a jerk, but I've given people the finger for this. On my bike, if someone tries to wave me to go and it's their turn I'll cross my arms over my chest to make it clear I ain't going.

Here's one of the MANY problems with this behavior. Say the good samaritan is driving along, I want to turn left. They stop for no reason and "politely" wave me in front of them. (ugh) I stare in disbelief for a second, then say, "uh, okay" and start going, meanwhile I wasn't quite quick enough and they go and run me down. Guess whose fault this is? MINE, because they had the right-of-way! I've seen this type of thing happen literally dozens of times. Trying to change the rules of the road in mid-stream while twenty different things are happening is a recipe for disaster.

I wish I had a sign that said "I don't need your help to drive, you wanna help me? Step on the damn gas pedal and get out of my way!" Or something a little snappier, that kind of runs on, but you get the idea.

The guy had insurance, and I am definitely going to ride again and I am catching heck from it from some friends and family but none of them ride and they never have understood my infatuation with it. The next XJ will be at least a 750. I am having difficulties with his insurance company but that will all be worked out soon.

at the scene the guy who cut me off said it was his fault, and the cops said it was his fault, he was ticketed and i was sent on my merry way. 6 hours later the cops knocked on my door and said when they filed then report with their lieutenant he called the county attorney who rescinded the other guys ticket and said I was at fault for being in the section of the turning lane that had a driveway to a business connected to it. So I lawered up and his insurance company called me all pissed off because I hired an attorney. luckily I recorded the call to play for my attorney. I think the other guy either knows or is related to someone or that there is some liability on the cities behalf. at any rate I have a fight on my hands

Cops on the scene got it right. They almost always do, it's their job to figure out accidents and their ass if they get it wrong. Amazing how some stuffed suit will try to re-write the facts when they don't meet with their approval.

If we are doomed it's because of As!@#les like that. Used to be people did the right thing because it was right, now too often they do whatever serves their interests, and that's usually money or cronyism-Sad..give em hell RSpark! After all you could be layed up in an IC unit right now with a $50,000 bill that is only growing by the minute!!

Re: Well it's been fun (update)

Just wanted to drop in and let everyone know I'm still alive. I'm till dealing with court and insurance companies. I've been out looking at 6 different XJ 550's sadly all of the sellers were unwilling to budge from their unrealistic prices.
