I'm going to do a top end refresh on my XJ900 engine. Is it possible to change out the cam chain without splitting open the lower case? I hear that there can be considerable chain stretch over time? The pistons have a heap of carbon buildup. Anyone have a quick tips on the process the could make life easier on a refresh? I'm trying to gather a parts list of consumables. Thanks!

The first thing that you need to buy is a good manual. This will answer most of your questions.

That's the best advice you can get.
I recommend that you acquire a Yamaha Factory Workshop Manual.
The Workshop Manual INCLUDES an Owners Manual in front.

Every single question you might have concerning servicing the Head will be answered in the Service Manual.

    You'll get a Step-by-step instructions and procedures.
The section on Cam Removal and Setting the TIMING is comprehensive and guides you through the process of removing and installing the Head in a foolproof manor.

I would do a compression check to verify it needs refreshing

    Seriously.

How many miles on the bike? I wouldn't rip into a motor just based on "I heard that the cam chain can stretch."

If the motor has less than 40,000 miles on it and makes good compression, it probably just needs a good tune up; valve adjustment, carb cleaning and sync, etc.

What about the carbon buildup? Is there a way to clean that out chemically or a way without removing the heads?

I haven't done a compression test yet. The engine has approximately 25,000 mi.

It's a puppy. Get a compression test; check the valve clearances and if any were too far out, test again after getting them in spec.

Unless it's been horribly abused you shouldn't need to tear it down.

Great, that's a relief! What about the large carbon buildup? It looks bad. Ideas?
