November 23rd, 2012 - SCROLL DOWN TO THE "REPRICED" POST

This is a pair of wheels from a 1982 Yamaha XJ650J Maxim. It was a project bike that we were nearly done with, until my husband was diagnosed with an inoperable spinal condition that made us decide to get out of motorcycling completely. We've been motorcycling since 1975, and this Yamaha was to be my own bike. We've been slowly parting it out. Now please understand that we aren't parting it out just to part it out. We're selling it because we are forced to no longer ride due to medical issues. If it weren't for his health issues, we would not be selling any of this stuff at all. So it's not like we fixed up old used junk just to sell it. We had rebuilt these wheels for the specific purpose of using them on my project bike ... this stuff was all keeper stuff!

Both wheels were stripped of their old cruddy bearings, sandblasted completely bare, and hand sanded after that to obtain a super even surface and provide an excellent substrate for the wheel primer and wheel coating to adhere too. We used Duplicolor Self Etching Primer to prep the surface, then Duplicolor Wheel Coating was applied in the gun metal grey color you see in the pictures. That is an ENAMEL not a laquer, so it is extremely durable. Being an enamel, it has a recoat window. Each wheel was given four solid coats of Wheel coating, providing a super tough (yet totally repairable) finish that promises to last decades. This was done very properly and the end result yielded an excellent and very durable finish. The whole wheel coating process took us a week of getting up at 4:30am to apply the next coat before the temperature rose above 90 degrees so the coats would be nice and even. Paint tends to dry in mid-air before it lands on the surface in high air temps. We live in the desert southwest, so we had certain challenges to overcome. The end results were what you see in the pictures, they look stunningly good!

Why didn't we powdercoat? Powdercoating is extremely difficult to repair chips and scratches, and the likelyhood of obtaining a color match is low. To do it properly, the old powdercoating must be burned off with a torch, then sandblasted clean. Which translates into COSTLY LABOR! The tires would have to be dismounted, and the bearings would have to be removed to fix a powdercoated wheel as well, due to the 400 degree baking process that powdercoating requires. That means you'd have to pay to have the tires remounted and rebalanced afterwards. Being very familiar with the powdercoating process, and it's pros and cons (we own and operate a business that relies on powdercoating) we elected to use Duplicolor Wheel Coating instead. It's FAR easier to repair any chips or scratches, just sand and prep the scratched/chipped area, and spray it on. You don't even have to remove the tire if the repair is needed in an area that would get paint on the tire. And seeing's how these are WHEELS that are subjected to the rigors of whatever is on the road, it seemed like the absolute best idea. The color we chose is very neutral and goes with just about any color that might be used on the other parts of the bike.

The wheels also have brand new very high quality wheel bearings (not made in China bearings) that are fully installed. They also have brand new Kenda Challenger tires that have been mounted and spin balanced, with brand new stainless steel valve stems as well. These are about as close to being "brand new wheels" as you're gonna get without actually being brand new. They are both dead-straight, with no dents, dings, gouges, or wobbles. They have never ever been used on a running motorcycle, so the tires are literally brand new. The rear is a 130/90-16 and the front is a 100/90-19. The front wheel also includes the front brake rotor which is in great condition, has been lightly resurfaced and coated with Duplicolor rotor paint, and is still within spec. These wheels look absolutely outstanding, are straight, and would be an excellent addition to any project bike.

And since the front wheel is already drilled and threaded for DOUBLE DISC ROTORS, it can be used on bikes with Seca front ends! Simply remove the little plastic protector thingy on the right side of the front wheel (it pulls right off with no tools) and bolt on a second brake rotor. So this front wheel will work on either single disc front ends, or dual disc front ends. We also have the "drive spider" that attaches to the rear wheel, and we also have both front and rear axles with nuts and hardware. Write us about adding those parts to this sale, we might be willing to negotiate pricing on those additional items. But they are not automatically included!

Remember, we aren't selling these because we are parting out some junky bike to make money, if it weren't for my husband's health issues we'd be keeping these! So the work we did on them was done with the intention of keeping them on my bike, so you can rest easy that we did the absolute best job we could on them. They weren't just painted up to get rid of them, not at all! We have roughly $200.00+ in EACH WHEEL when you include the brand new tires, the mounting and balancing, new bearings, sandblasting, etch-priming, superbly done recoating, new valve stems, not to mention the amount of time we have invested in getting them restored. So the price we have on this ad is very fair, in fact it's actually leaning towards the buyer's advantage by a good amount!

We're literally giving these away at $270 for the pair plus shipping. We will not sell them separately, they must be purchased as a pair.

They are all boxed up and ready to ship. We boxed them up using the least amount of volume possible to keep the shipping as low as absolutely possible.

Shipping: We use USPS Priority Mail or Parcel Post for most items, and this includes insurance and delivery confirmation. Shipping is calculated by the size and weight to your zip code ... this will be added to the sale price. We do not mark-up or make money on shipping costs, so you get charged what we get charged. If you want faster shipping than USPS Priority Mail, or want a different shipping company used, write us. Money can fix most of these shipping concerns. :)

    Thanks -- Abeja. :)

Re: XJ650 Wheels w/brand new tires - totally refurbed.

    Here's a breakdown of costs.

    Kenda Challenger 130/90-16 about $70 plus $8 s/h.
    Kenda Challenger 100/90-19 about $55 plus $8 s/h.

    Mounting/balancing/new stainless steel stems = $25 EACH + (total $50.+)

Duplicolor Wheel Coating - 5 cans (2.5 for each wheel) $7 each (total $35+)
    Duplicolor Etching Primer - 2 cans (1-each wheel) $6 each (total $12+)

    Sandblasting $10 each wheel. (total $20 +)

All new quality bearings, both wheels total $50+.

Wheel value, salvage "ebay" price $30 each (total $60+)

Total value of these wheels = AT LEAST $368 ... and that's a pretty darned conservative estimate.

It also does not include the (at LEAST) 10 hours of labor, driving the wheels to various shops for sandblasting, mounting and balancing, and the time taken to box them up and prep for shipping.

And the front wheel includes the front disk as well! Let's not forget that.

So our asking price of $270 plus S/H is a very good deal folks! We're taking a beating on them. But we're in need of money again so we're pricing them at "get them sold!" prices. We've bills that must be paid.

    Thanks. Abeja. :)

Just an FYI- its going to be alot cheaper shipping something so large/heavy through UPS.

At least that's been my experience when shipping bikes.

Glws, looks like you did a nice job refinishing them.

I've never seen anyone put so much detail into a For Sale ad for a set of bomb-canned wheels.

    Kudos to you sir.

Is it my computer screen, or are they the wrong color? From here they look plain gray, and I can't see the shiny aluminum edges.

Yeah, Dave, they painted the whole thing. Me, I'd rather have a set totally stripped over totally painted.

This makes me want to polish that edge on my rims;) Well, I did just fix my rechargeable Dremel tool...(detached metal solder tab on one of the batteries inside battery pack. Amazing what you can fix if you are willing to take things apart, I had planned to replace the batteries following online instructions, but they were still good)

Re: XJ650 Wheels w/brand new tires - totally refurbed.

We need to sell them. When you need to do something urgent, it is wise to put some effort into it.

Thanks for the praise on the ad I wrote, we worked pretty hard on getting them to look nice, they deserve to be properly represented. And I have a ~thing~ about ads that don't show any respect for prospective buyers. Sellers should at least show enough respect towards people thinking of buying something to properly inform them. Some people post ads that are just downright insulting, they don't think highly enough of the people that might GIVE THEM THEIR MONEY to put a few details about the item in the ads.

When you want to get something done you need to put some effort into it. We really need to get these wheels sold, so I put a little effort into the ad. Thanks again for the nice comments. :)

Re: XJ650 Wheels w/brand new tires - totally refurbed.

That all depends on what the "right color" is. Keep in mind we didn't intend to sell these wheels, these were to be used on my bike. So it's not like we coated these wheels with the intention of mainstream "me too" appeal.

To me they are not only the ~right~ color, they are the perfect color. I had no intentions of making them look stock, everyone has stock, I wanted what suited me.

Duplicolor lists the color as HWP102 GRAPHITE. So if you need to see exactly what that color is, perhaps folks might check out Duplicolor's site, or hit a Duplicolor dealer and see.

You don't see any shiney aluminum edges because ethey don't have shiney aluminum edges. I didn't want that on my wheels. There's no "right or wrong" when building a motorcycle, it's all about personal taste.

I'm sure if you keep looking you'll find what you want. :) Good luck!

    :)

Re: XJ650 Wheels w/brand new tires - totally refurbed.

We've built bikes before with the type of finish you're talking about. They are difficult to keep looking good. The cast aluminum tends to soak-in oil and grease stains, and if scratched it's impossible to make the scratch look the same as the rest of the cast finish.

My husband's race-inspried Honda Magna has "stripped" wheels, and it's a hassle keeping them looking good.

So we've tried many finishes, I selected what you see in the ad above.

The wheel coating we used on these wheels hoses right off. Grease, oil, or other road tar type stains clean off easily. The decision to use this particular wheel coating was thoroughly labored over. It is designed to deal with all the crap that a wheel is subjected too. And it was a great match with the color scheme I was going with. The engine was nearly totally blacked out. But it was a sortof graphite-black, not regular black that looks like BBQ paint. These wheels matched this look perfectly. I was going for a very racey look.

Here's how it was profiling (that paint on the tank was NOT what I was going with btw) ..

Maximike, you may find that polishing the rim-edge is easier done by mounting the tire-less wheel on the bike and spinning it, while using an abrasive (like some sort of 3M pad) to polish the rim's edge. It will look far better and any striations on the rim caused by the polishing will be in the proper direction. As soon as the Sunlight hits it you'll be happy you did it this way.

    We've been building motorcycles since 1979. :)

    Thanks everyone, Abeja. :)

Oh. My bad. I thought you were restoring the bike, so I was having trouble seeing the black rims with the aluminum showing, which would have been correct.. That explains it.

Re: XJ650 Wheels w/brand new tires - REPRICED.

    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

    !!!!! REPRICED !!!!!

    $$$ 225.00 FOR THE PAIR $$$

    PM me!

These wheels aren't doing us any good sitting here in our shop. This is as low as we can afford to put them. We have nearly $350 in this pair so we're honestly taking a severe beating here, but we REALLY need to sell these wheels.

Just about all I have left on my project bike is the bare frame (w/clear title), the headlight assy, a set of working instruments, the grab bar (totally refurbished and looks WONDERFUL), the rear footpeg/pipe hangers thingies. As well as numerous little fixtures, clamps, nuts bolts, etc. So these beautifully reworked wheels with brand new mounted and balanced tires are just sitting here. They're completely individually boxed up in round boxes (so as to be as economical as absolutely possible to ship).

C'mon fellas ... this is killin' us here! $225 for the pair plus shipping. This is a friggin STEAL of a buy!!!

    Here's a breakdown of costs.

    ** Kenda Challenger 130/90-16 about $70 plus $8 s/h.
    ** Kenda Challenger 100/90-19 about $55 plus $8 s/h.
    ** Mounting/balancing/new stainless steel stems = $25 EACH + (total $50.+)

** Duplicolor Wheel Coating - 5 cans (2.5 for each wheel) $7 each (total $35+)
    ** Duplicolor Etching Primer - 2 cans (1-each wheel) $6 each (total $12+)

    ** Sandblasting $10 each wheel. (total $20 +)

** All new high quality bearings, both wheels total $50+.

** Wheel value, salvage "ebay" price $30 each (total $60+)

Total value of these wheels = AT LEAST $368 ... and that's a pretty darned conservative estimate.

It also does not include the (at LEAST) 10 hours of labor, driving the wheels to various shops for sandblasting, mounting and balancing, and the time taken to box them up and prep for shipping.

And the front wheel includes the front disk as well! Let's not forget that.

THESE AREN'T JUST "BOMB-CAN PAINTED WHEELS", THEY HAVE BEEN TOTALLY REBUILT, NEW TIRES (MOUNTED AND SPIN BALANCED WITH NEW STAINLESS STEEL VALVE STEMS), NEW BEARINGS (TOTALLY NOT MADE IN CHINA POOP), SANDBLASTED CLEAN, PRIMERED WITH HIGH QUALITY ETCHING PRIMER, AND COATED WITH MULTIPLE COATS OF HIGH QUALITY WHEEL COATINGS!

Keep in mind that I intended on keeping these wheels, so they weren't just "repainted" with the intention to sell them off. These were going on my bike, so all the care in the world was taken to make them as "renewed" as one can possibly do to a set of motorcycle wheels.

PM me ---- PM me --- PM me

    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Nice, glad you were able to recoup some of your $ and effort.

Those were nice looking and the work showed, 4 years ago and I'll bet you could have sold those for twice as much. There just aren't as many people out there with expendable cash, or they are scared to part with what they do have cash wise. It's getting better though. After restoring some small parts and beginning work on a small truck I can appreciate the time and effort it takes to make it look 'right'.
