Hi. I've been lurking for quite a while and I love this site. As a new owner & rider I've learned lots.

There is one question I have about the operation of the choke on my 700X:

When the bike is started cold it with the choke 'on' it idles okay, but a bit rich (of course). If I beging moving the choke lever to the left (toward 'off') the idle begins to increase- up to 3,000 plus and then drops off quickly as I continue moving the lever toward lean. All this within a pretty narrow range of choke lever movement- maybe 1/8 in.- so it seems touchy.

Is this normal or is it telling me that something is out of adjustment with the carburation?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

It could be a couple of things.

Right out of the box, though ... as you close-off the Heavy Enrichment needed to get the Dead Cold engine running ... you pass through a little window of Richness that the bike really likes ... that boosts you up some revs toward that 3000 figure.

This might mean that you have a slightly LEAN condition in the Pilot Mixtures and the little extra perks it up nice.

You might be a little out off sync THREE ways. By the way the Enrichment Valves are being operated by the "Lifting Forks" ... the Butterflys are opening for throttle ... and the Pilot Mixture Screws being a little hotter than the others.

If the 3000 rpm "Little Extra" Idle is nice and steady ... it's likely to be The Pilot Mixtures.

If you have them set to 2-1/2 like the book says ... I'd bring them out to closer to 3.0. The added enrichment will smooth it out so you can shut the "Choke Enrichment" right off sooner when its warmed-up.

So Rick, if I back out the mixture screws to 3.0, will I need to then readjust the idle rpm down to keep the 'warm engine' idle in the proper range?

Also, am I looking at the right screw- part #12 on the carb diagram in my gallery?

I don't know what the ideal setting is for MIKUNI, yet.

We DO know ... that adjusting the Pilot Screws OUT to 3-Turns ... for those of us running HSC Hitachi Carbs is better than 2-1/2 for both Idle and Performance.
