I'm bobbering my '82 750 and wondering where to cut the tail section of the frame. I'm keeping the rear shocks. I've looked thru the forum and I've seen several options. Is there any risk of cutting too near of the shock's mounting point? As you can see on the several pics I just took on the forum, some are cutting really near to the shocks while others seem to keep 3 to 4" of the tail...

IMHO close to the shock mount looks better...

^^ Agreed. I debated this one for awhile too before I chopped mine (the last pic above). In the end I don't think there's much of a difference in the structural integrity either way so it's just a personal preference. I just don't like that extra tube sticking out. It looks kinda' awkward but could provide some extra support for mounting a seat or rear fender, signals, etc.

BTW, I still plan on plugging the holes with 12 ga. shotgun shells (pretty common) or I've been kicking around some other ideas.

You can also just use black plastic autobody plugs... neat, clean, almost look "factory."

Ok, thanks for the input. I was concerned if it could affect the strenght of the frame.

Tomorrow, I'll pick an '82 Goldwing front fender that I'll use as a rear fender. I'll wait to get it before cutting anything.

The top photo is almost exactly where I cut mine. However, I'm planning on extending it back out with a rather large cowling & light unit (including a bit of storage space), so its not exactly a bobber, more of a "cafe race tourer". I don't think the ultra-short-tail bobber look suits these bikes, unless you do other frame mods as well.

How about a triangle gusset forward of the shock mount? I have a ex- cop 750 with a factory gusset, unlike a regular 750 frame I also have.
