i'm looking at a fender such as this one on ebay for my project. they say it is off an xj550, but don't specify the year. I'd like to see if I can find something local as the shipping is just too much IMHO. can anyone positively identify?

doesn't look like an xj fender as they all (as far as I know) have some obvious contours to them that that one doesn't. Not sure what that one is from.

It does look like it could be the back half of a 550 Max fender. The 550s (Maxim and Seca) have "half fenders" in the rear, so the forward portion is a separate piece.

What Kind of "Project" are you looking to do? just a restore? a Bobber? a Cafe'?

If your looking for that style find a Trailer fender, or an old Harley front fender from an FL/FLH or any late Harley Bagger front fender and cut and shape it to what you want. Another thing is go to your local bone yard one you can "You pull it" yourself and find Truck spare tire rings ( outer part ) they are made of stainless, easy to cut and shape and make excellent rear fenders and can paint ( Powder coat ) or Polish to a nice shine! I find them all the time for $5 bucks in my local area.

That doesn't look like any XJ fender I've ever pulled.

It really is the back half of a 550 Max fender, honest. The 550's have two pieces that come together to form a fender; that's the back half.

Look in the fiche for confirmation.

to answer the question of type of project, it is more along the lines of a bobber project, but I have found out that the law in my area its that the plate must be mounted horizontally on the rear fender/mud guard. that may screw my original intentions.

I did what PacNorth said. Went down to 6 Robbles and bought a really nice thick trailer fender that fit the curve of the xj rear tire perfectly for $24. Would recomend it to anyone looking to build on a budget.

How about the "chrome" trim ring from a van's spare tire - it's actually polished stainless and will never rust.

They're laying around in junkyards, and you could get a wrinkled one for the asking and cut off the bad part.

If you want a real motorcycle fender, go to J&PCycles.com. They won't have one especially for your bike, you'll have to make it fit. But it'll look better than a trailer fender unless your going for the minimal look. Just make sure you take all the needed measurements before ordering.

Find those all the time in the Local U-pull it wrecking yards Most I have paid is $5 for one and it was almost New. the stainless it self is great for making things other then Fenders too. Should also be a Bike Bone yard locally you can pick.

sadly, there are only 2 bike bone yards withing 250km, neither of which are self serve. boo-urns to that. I've got plenty of time to look for what i need, riding season is probably a good 4.5-5 months away for me....

Does anyone know off-hand what the width of the front (where it joins with the plastic portion) of the XJ550 rear fender is?
