I have theI have the rear end, wheel, and brake drum setup from an 82 650, and would like to swap even for the rear wheel with cush setup and brake drum from a 550 maxim. We can work out shipping or meet anywhere near Atlanta.

Re: have 650 rear drive setup, need 550 carbs

Thanks orange, but I'm in less than $70 on this bike so far and already have the seat, tank, frame with forks, and engine minus carbs. This will be a true budget build, and I can register this frame with only a Bill of sale in Georgia.

If you had a welding machine or know someone who has one, you could cut the shaft tunnel off and fab a new left side. Would take some quality fabbing to get straight, but doable. As far mounting the motor goes, custom motor mounts. But it is a lot to go thru.
Do you have the 650 motor and what's wrong with it?

I have it, but it's completely locked up. I think it ran on its side and was oil starved because the exhaust cam was broken into 3 pieces. I'll be altering the stance a good bit and trying to fit a wider rear tire, so I figured hard tail was the easiest and cheapest way to go. I've thought about modifying the swingarm as well, and may still look into it, but I'd still end up changing out the seat rails and moving the shock mounts too. I'll have to keep thinking on it.

About 550 carbs: they're different depending on if the motor is a Seca or Maxim.

The difference between 550 motors is the cams; the Seca has "hotter" cams so the carbs are different. Different main jet needles and different pilot air jets. The jets are easy to find and cheap; the needles not so much.

The main thing is to identify the motor so you know which carb parts you need to run. Check the "shorty" VIN on the top of the transmission housing: if it begins in "5K5" then it's a Maxim motor; if it begins with "4U8" then it came from a 550 Seca.

Bigfitz coming through with sound advice again. Thanks man, I saw one of your other posts about that, but wasn't sure how to ID the motor. I'll check it when I get home today.

Ok, I got a set of 550 maxim carbs. Sorry for all the edits! I'd rather swap stuff than purchase if possible.
