Alright so, I read somewhere a while back that the difference in power (about 10hp) between a FZX700 Fazer and a Maxim X was primarily due to cylinder angle and the carbs, and the carbs are only different by one mm...
from what I understand, the main difference in the carbs are that they are downdraft carbs. If I, (bear with me now) were to build a set of manifolds that angled the carbs completely up, (out of copper or a similar material) would it be a possibility to see performance gains? or am I completely being illogical?
Because If I could, say, create the just under 180 degree bend necessary, with proper tuning, would I not see some form of power gains?
Just spit-balling an idea because I'd like a larger winter project to sink my teeth into, as being laid off from my illustrious job leads me to have FAR too much free time...

    Not likely.
Even if your manifold was tuned and ported, ... the Engines capabilities are just about Maxed-out stock.

    People have had Cams reground.
    Shed weight.
Spent big bucks on Keihin Carbs.
Altered the Timing by elongating the Pick-up's Mounting Plate holes.
And, ... not really gained all that much over Showroom Stock.

You'll be looking for another gear to shift too that isn't there.
Or, ... wondering if some-other Final Drive will give you more speed.

An ideal port would be parallel with the valve stem. Obviously this isn't possible so we end up with a bend, which causes turbulence/ instability etc. in the flow. Adding another bend adds to this. The effect of this would be hard to anticipate. Downdraft porting as per the first diagram would be the most efficient method. Far from easy but you want a project :D

You should look for a rack of Early Mikuni Round or Flat Slides and Fabricate Manifolds to Mount them on your Bike.

    They were considered Race Carbs.
Getting them on you Bike should be easier than trying to get Down-draft Carbs to fiit.
