Bought about 2 months ago. I've stripped it down, painted the frame, gas tank, swing-arm, etc and I'm now starting to put everything back together.

    Items not going back on:
    Turn Signals
    Fenders
    Fog Light
    Decorations....

Items I still need to get:
    MAC 4-1 Exhaust
    Handlebar Risers
New handlebar controls for 1 inch bar
    Forward Controls
    Headlight/Taillight
    Tires
    Misc, brakes, oil, etc...

About to post a few pics

Well, I'm about 60-70% there, engine back in, just down to exhaust, tires, brakes and brake lines, forward controls and I'll be riding. I'll post pics later, always seem to have trouble posting.

It was new to me in May 2012 and I rode it stock for several weeks before I decided (it was the original intention) to strip it down and begin the bobber project. My goal is for it to be road ready by spring.

Ugh! Wiring!! I was torn between attempting to re-use as much of the factory wiring as possible, but now I think I'm going to use the XJ minimum wiring diagram I found on this site. Anyone else used it?

I used it but modified it a bit to include after market turn signals and a few other things Work's great. Was going to do same thing use existing wiring harness but it was so old and messed up I just made a new one from scratch. and Nice job on your build.

    This.

This right here is what I'm trying to do to my bike. How easy/unbelievably difficult was it to do a different set up with your bars?

I have been looking at some things on DCC but didn't want to spend some ca$h on something that wont work.

I also can't wait to see how you do your seat. Posting as many pics of you mounting your seat would help me out graciously.

I just drilled the top of my tree to fit HD risers (not new holes, just opened up existing ones) and everything bolted up. Pretty easy. I just ordered my seat, springs and stantions, I'll post pics of the install.

Complete re-wire this weekend basically junking the old harness, except I'll reuse the plugs for the TCI, etc.... Wish me luck, hopefully it cranks tomorrow, that'll make it a good day, been waiting for this thing to get a pulse for a while. I won't be actually starting it though, got s long ways to go for that.

    Things left to do,
    Rebuild and jet carbs
    New tires
    New brakes
    New brake lines
    Buy and install exhaust
Install seat next week (just waiting for it to get here)
Buy and install brake light/license plate bracket
    RIDE!!!!!

So the bike is fully wired, engine turns over and I got spark, only issue is the horn blows constantly, I'll work on that tomorrow. I'm using HD controls, so if anyone has had this issue, I'd appreciate the input.

Argh, a couple of electrical gremlins to work through, but isn't that part of the fun? lol.

Seat and stantions should be here this week, I have the springs already so I'll be wrapping up the wiring and mounting the seat this week. Also ordered the forward controls and linkages today, so maybe about a week I'll be able to really feel how it sits.

Once I get the seat and forward controls installed, I'll post up some more pics.

ok this project is very similar to mine. Also thankyou for your response to my thread on the airbox. Now can i ask you a few questions.

    1. Are your rear shocks standard or are they shorter ? If shorter where did you get them and what length

    2. how tall are the bolt on risers. Also where did you source those. From what i gather, you drilled out, and re-tapped the existing bar mount/riser to fit the new risers ?

    3. I am wanting new handle bar controls to suit a custom 1" bar, where did you source your controls from ?

    4. How did you mount your battery, custom box ?

    5. What pod filters are you going to be using, where are they sourced ?

    6. Where did you put your ignition, I am wanting to put it down below the seat. I see them do this on OCC and I like it.

Sorry for so many questions, I am new to the game. I am in Australia and the custom parts to suit are hard to source here.
Below is a pic of where the bike is at. I have a maxim tank on the way and a cool seat pan. Once they arrive i will chop the rear frame to suit.

What shocks did you use? Did they require modification? Bushing size? Any info you could share would be great. Thanks

They are the shocks from a Sportster, I had to hone down the mounts on the XJ frame with a dremmel, not fun, but it works. They are about 2 inches shorter.

Looking good man.. could be my bike's long lost brother! Have you ran it yet with the forward controls? I hooked mine up the same way and the shift pattern was reversed... just wondering if you have the same issue.

very nice bike man. I haven't had my bike running since the forwards went on, but I've pulled it through the gears, all seems normal.

Nope, not normal, I went out to the garage this evening and checked (thought I already had, but like I said, haven't had it running yet), gears are backwards, so I flipped the bracket that hooks to the gearbox, all fixed, nearly no clearance to make it happen tho, but it works.

Rebuilt front brakes today. used a grease gun to get the stuck pistons out, worked like a charm! About an hour total to rebuild both calipers, replace pads and put back on the bike. Need to order my new lines and get fluid. Going with DOT5 since my new MC requires it, cleaned the calipers real good of any DOT3 and the junction too.

All that is left is a little wiring, exhaust and rebuild carbs and its on the road!

Finished the last of the wiring today, that is, unless an Gremlins rear their ugly heads when its starting time, but I think I'm in good shape. Items left to complete:

    1. Fork seals
    2. Carb rebuild
    3. Exhaust
    4.Tune
    5. RIDE

You're going to want to reinforce your frame by welding a bar between the shock mounts, or the frame will flex and it will weave. Nothing a good welder can't handle.

    Does look good though.

Good catch KDub, the brace could be disguised as a seat mount or the rear fender mount, but you will definitely need a brace in there somewhere.

Thanks. Where are you talking about adding a brace? There is a cross brace right under the seat, not much forward of the springs in the seat.
