ok just wondering if any one has ever modded an xj so that you can still keep the airbox but have the frame cut and lowered?

I really like the bobber look but do not want to lose the airbox. If I were to lower the airbox would that have adverse affects on the vortex created by the box in the original position? I also realize that I would have to lower the battery.
I do like the look of pods but for me its not worth the hassle that goes with them.

    thanks dan

How would you "lower the airbox"? I think the easier option would be to build a custom airbox that has the same tuning as the original, and mounts to the carbs the same way using the same or identically profiled velocity stacks.

For my bike, I plan to build a custom airbox with the same resonant characteristics by using the same volume and tube cross section / length. Not done it yet, but I'll be sure to post reports in few months on how it goes!

An alternative would be to figure out the stock airbox resonant frequency (using a tone generator and measuring sound pressure) and then just build whatever (reasonable) size box you like and tune it by changing the port cross section / length.

Mine is bobbed, lowered and still has the airbox in the stock location.

If you look at pg 3 of this post, 82 maxim chopped, lowered and much much more.. , you can see how his was done. Don't know if it's good, bad, right or wrong or whatever, it's his bike and he seems happy with it.
