Xj 750 seca 1983 wanting to ditch factory handlebars for bobber look. Straight drag bars or something up high, comfortable with good handling. I talked to the guy at Indy recycle place and he said I ll need to get a more conventional upper triple tree and I think he's right. Could I use a top triple tree from a xj 650 maxim or a xs model. I really want the basic that's gonna give me the most options. Need advise???

my 83 seca has about the most conventional bar mounts there is.
i don't see why there's a problem with the top tree, maybe the master cylinder and cables, pictures?

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for but you should be able to take off the factory bar mounts and use some aftermarket or Virago risers from ebay instead of tearing apart your triple tree. Then you can mount any 7/8" bars you want. Check the thread in my signature.

There is nothing unconventional about the upper tree on the 750 Seca. It uses the mounting stubs instead of risers for the handle bar moounting. Just unbolt the stubs, and bolt on new risers.

And tell the clown at the recycle place to look at what he is tearing apart once in a while.

I put 1" drag bars on mine with straight 1" Risers for HD, just drilled out the existing holes to half inch. Mine is a Maxim though, not sure the difference.

Not sure if it'll help, but here's what I did with my 81 550 Seca when I wanted to put drag bars on her. With the tank I'm using, the drag bars were hitting, dinging, and chipping the tank, but the "risers" are cast as part of the upper tree. I got a complete front end from an 81 750 virago to transplant. The steering stem was longer on the Virago tree, so I took it to a fab shop and had them swap stems from the Seca tree to the Virago tree, fabbed up some longer risers, and problem solved. They only charged me $40 for the stem swap. The Virago front end added some length. There is a slight rake designed into the Virago tree that kept everything level and she rides like a dream.
