I have an 1982 xj750j and last year i used this mixima primium 4 oil, and it seemed like a burnt really fast, and i talk to a friend that used it and he said the same thing.
So what brands should i use for oil, oil filter, and spark plugs? just to make sure i get everything smooth this year.

Motorcycle-specific conventional oil, such as Castrol 4T. Yamaha recommends 20W40 which is hard to find; 20W50 will work fine. Do not use car oil and stay away from synthetics.

Oil filters can be got from FRAM, WIX and even NAPA (made by WIX) and those brands come with the requisite o-rings.

For spark plugs, I'd stick to the recommended NGK's.

Would definately recommend going with the aftermarket filters. 1 because you'll save a few bucks, and 2 the yamaha filter does not come with the O-rings needed. And if you get a sales guy like I had you'll get the "what o-rings" Yeah, not going back there again...

    jkstull,

Don't know about where you're located but my local Autozone carries both Castrol 4T 20W40 and 20W50. I asked the same question in my beginning stages and BF told me once the ambient (outside) temperature reaches and stays above 70* to switch from 40 to 50. I do. Hope this helps. NGK BP7ES is the standard type used for these bikes. NGK BPR7ES will work and will not cause harm, but IMO if you can get the the non-resistance plugs do so. The HT caps are resistance caps. The non-resistance plugs will produce a short wide arc across the gap whereas the resistance plugs will produce a longer (time wise) narrow arc. Hope this helps.

What they said :) I personally use Yamalube brand case oil. Bel-ray for my rear gears and Lucus oil products for for all other random fluids and a good NON petroleum based grease. Def NGK plugs. Those are all I use on any motor period.

(I helped a stranded Lucus oil semi truck once, turns out he was the lube guy and headed to the St Louis motocross race, gave me over $300 in free motorcycle oil products. And shirts and stickers lol. I was hooked!)

has anyone used this maxima brand? they make oil, fork oil, gear oil, everything, and its what the guy i had been going to sells, and i used the fork oil, and bought the final drive oil, but havnt used it yet, and now im wondering if i should change it out.

also, is SHELL 91 octane still the best gas to use? thats the middle grade.

I bought maxima grease. And they make great 2 stroke synthetic oil that I use in my dirtbikes. I wouldn't doubt their other products...

As for shell gasoline. I got bad gas from them the 1 time I went there might of been a bad luck thing but idk. I only put premium in my bikes

    jk,

Search > Forums> in the top box type something like...What fuel should I use > Submit. The system will search all posts/threads that are related to what you ask. I think the general population and what I use is 89 + a additive (like Stabil) if you can't get non-ethonal. I think...

During the season, .. I pump the High Test.

    $.11 cents more a gallon.
    2-1/2 gallon tank.
    27-cents a pop.

    NO corn-juice. No knocks.

In my shop I primarily use Maxima fork oils and Maxima 10W40 conventional oil. I've never had any problems with them.

If your oil is disappearing it's not because of the brand.

In my own motorcycle I run SuperTech 15W40 diesel oil from Wal*Mart at $11/gallon. About half the price of the Maxima "motorcycle" oil.

Final drives get SuperTech 80W90 hypoid gear oil.

The oil isnt dissappearing, It just seems to turn black rather quickly, like bad oil. I've done a headjob this winter, so that might change the problem, but my buddies seca runs like a top, and his maxima oil seems burnt.

Ill stick with the fork oil, but I'm gonna try this castrol 4T.
    thanks everybody.

When you have an Issue of Motor Oil becoming darkened within a short interval, ... you should perform a Compression Test.

You may find a Cylinder or two that is allowing excessive "Blow-by" into the Crankcase.

The LOW Spec for Compression is 118~120 psi.

yea. i just did a complete head job on it and got all the parts for tuning it in right, i thiink it was running hot on top of a 10-15% leak on each cylinder...
I'm gonna try this castrol because my local bike store just moved across town.
