I have an 82 xj750J, im a giant, and I HATE that seat. I feel like my ass is either falling off one side or the other. my friend has a xj750 seca with a way different seat that seems to be more cup like and its alot comfier, but the po put it on.
I'm considering getting a solo spring seat, but dont wanna loose that ride hight, cause my knees would hit my elbows. Im surely not the first one with this problem.
    So what are my options?

    is it just too mushy?

You can take the cover off and work some silicone caulk into the foam to stiffen it up some.

Sargent Cycle: http://www.sargentcycle.com/ Click on "Custom Seat Services" and read about what's possible (virtually anything you can come up with.)

They've done two seats for me now; and created an "all day" seat for me for my Seca.

Excellent customer service, good folks to work with, superb workmanship and not really expensive. Highly recommended.

Have a look at www.day-long.com. I have a seat on order from them and can report back when it arrives. They have a good reputation and look very comfortable.

Don't have one on my XJ, but I got a Russell (Day-Long)built for my LT a few years ago and it is amazing... It was about a four week evolution though. You send them your seat along with various photos of you on the bike, and your height, weight, inseam, etc. and they custom build the seat for your needs.

whats a price range to expect from these companies? I'm not trying to spend a fortune on a seat. Depending, I may try my hand at it myself, seems pretty easy.

Yeah, they're not cheap, none of them. If for doing it yourself, I agree; after all, what could go wrong...? :D

Ok, Has anyone tryed making their own simple seat cover? Im thinking just some vinyl thrown over tight, with 2 simple seams where the rear seat plateaus. Im spending alot on foam, and really dont care about it looking fancy, just neat and simple.

foam, before you spend money go find a carpet store or installer and get some FREE carpet padding, there's all kinds and they'll give you scraps. glue a stack together till you get the thickness you want.
vinyl covering from the fabric store, there's some that stretches one way and some that stretches two ways, you want the two way stuff
