yesterday I rode to work for the first time this year, cool. I got out of work early enough so I went and got a state inspection sticker, she passed no problem, also cool. so I leave the inspection place cruising down the road look at my speedometer and it's not working. WTF. upon inspection it turns out that the screw (bolt?) that holds the cable in place is gone. I think that's all that's wrong. so is it safe to ride with the hole for the cable exposed? I wondered if any vital fluids would leak out or if I should worry about forgeign matter getting in? I know I have to be careful with no speedo. also does anyone know the size of the missing screw (bolt?)? I can't find my clymer's and don't know if it would have that info. anyway. thanks in advance.

I would think it won't hurt anything to run with the cable out. Sorry - can't help you with the screw size. You can bet it's metric though!

Are you talking about where it screws into the back of the speedometer? If so, trace down the cable, the nut may have just slid down and out of sight. This happened to me last year when I first started riding.

Methinks your description is a bit confusing -- are you saying the cable is disconnected from the back of the speedo?

If so (and I'm assuming so) then it's no big deal - happens sometimes just from vibration. Leaving it isn't a big deal - about the only risk is dust or crud getting in there and gumming up the works.

Easy to fix - put the cable back in and the "screw" is actually a captive nut that's attached the cable. It's probably just slid down somewhere so you should be able to find it, slid it back up and screw it back on.

OT, but who else read the subject line and cringed in imagined pain with the whine of a dentist's drill in their ears?

    "Is it safe?"
    Is what safe?"

    "Is it safe?"
    "Yes, it's perfectly safe."

    "Is it safe?"
"No, it's not safe at all."

    etc.

sorry to confuse anyone. the cable is disconnected from the fork end. there is a clip with a small screw (bolt?) that screws into the bottom of the fork.

So, did your cable fall out, or did you remove it?

No problem riding it, no additional damage should occur.
