My first one was a 82 XJ650 YICS motor that I didn't do anything to but ride. I bought it after selling my 01 EG Classic (started a family) for just something to ride. It was in really good condition and was mechanically gone through on a regular basis. At the same time I had this bike my father in law and my wifes grandfather both had 81 XJ650's. I ended up selling mine a couple years after buying it, and my father in law sold his soon after having his for many years. My father in law kept up on his pretty regularly and rode it pretty regularly. A few weeks ago my wifes grandfather told me he was hanging up the helmet (at 88) and wanted to get rid of the bike. He averaged close to 1,000 miles per year the 10 years he had it. I knew the bike was not kept up on maintenance wise but for the price ($200) I couldn't pass it up. I'm fairly mechanical enough that I can tackle what needs to be done and have friends that can help. Went to his house and jump started it, finally getting it to run and rode it the 5 miles home in about 30 degree weather. I'm going to try and go though and make it right, full tune up, carbs, valves, brakes, tires, fluids ect. I want to try and make it reliable enough to use it to commute to work (40miles round trip). Well on to the pics.

Hoping I don't have to get to deep into the motor, hoping the chain guides and everything is still good. It does have what seems to be a lot of upper engine noise, though I know these things are not normally quiet anyways. Any shop book suggestions and parts suppliers to get the parts I need will be very helpful.

Congrats on the new old bike. I would not ride that bike two houses down knowing that the break hose is the original. That is an accident about to happen (well documented).

You will hear about the basic "to do" list before the bile is reliable:
    - check valve shims
    - replace brake hoses
    - replace brakes period (rebuild mc)
    - service and sync carbs.

You will need an owners manual and a service manual specific for your bike. You can find them on ebay usually or somebody in the forum can poit you on the right direction.

Welcome to the forum, fell free to ask as many questions as you need people in this forum really know their XJs

    Good luck
