I am working on an 81 xj 550 and looking for an alternate fuel tank besides stock one. Are there any other tanks with the wider channel on the tank?

    I am primarily interested in:
    Xs fuel tank early 80's
    Virago 250 fuel tank
    or something similar.

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

An XS650 tank would need the mounts modified to fit the 550. The front mounts on the XS tank hold the rubber cups like the 550 frame does.

I'm assuming that you have a Maxim, V-Star tank has been put on a Max before. Don't know how much mod work would be needed on a 550.
Could also put old split tank style Harley on it, would require fabbing some brackets and a top center cover.

A Seca 550 tank will fit, but not really "flow" with the lines of the other bodywork.

I am currently working on fitting a '78 CX500 tank on my 550 Maxim. Just started the process. The channel inside the tank is wide on the CX tank due to their super thick upper frame. The only thing is that the tank is a little longer, so I'm making a simple bracket to extend where the bolt under the seat sits. That being said, the stock seat won't fit, so I'm working on a custom seat pan/seat as well. If you're interested I can keep you posted on the progress...finger crossed!

Shame, would've been interesting to see that... If he used a maggot EC eurosport tank then he could've tagged the comfy seat along with it...

EDIT-: oops bit of an old thread...
