Posted this as part of my Seca Restoration Thread but thought it was cool enough to post a whole separate thread on it as well:

If you don't want to mess with electrolysis or want to mess up whatever you're working on with vinegar/muriatic acid, this is the stuff to get!

Comes in both quart and gallon jugs, and is available at harbor freight - so a great thing to get 20% off on, as well as a free flashlight!

    Check this out:

    Before:

After soaking overnight and a little brushing with a soft bristled toothbrush -

    Harmless to chrome!!

Have to say I'm highly impressed - plus its REUSABLE. Pretty awesome.

It's normally ~30$ a gallon before tax, and with the coupon it makes it around 25$ after tax.

    Worth it in my mind!

I'm going to use it on a bunch of other small random pieces, and then use it in my tank - so that will be the true test!

    Heres their promo video:

    No fumes......no fun lol

Thats odd that it doesnt eat the chrome off though, the things they come up with....looks sweet. Let me know how the tank thing works out!!

EvapoRust is just beet juice (yes, actual juice from beets). It works great, but if you live in a beet growing region you can make your own for much less.

    Really? damn, imagine that, haha

they use beet juice on our roads in winter to melt the ice - stuff must be magic!

What's all needed to make it? I'm sure i could hunt down some beet juice somewhere....

Well wait a minute. If it's just beet juice why would you have to live in a beet growing region? Why not just buy some beets and juice them? I do know that beet juice is really healthy stuff for your body but it def. doesn't taste good!

It's cheaper to buy straight from a farm than it is from a grocery store. It takes quite a lot of beets to make a gallon of juice (around 10 pounds).

Interesting. Might have to grab an old set of carbs and try that, just to see how it works on them. Probably would have to be a two step process, but if it works it would be another option.

Beat you to it. Works fine. Just for grins I also put in some steel shot and rolled it around to get to the parts I couldn't reach with the steel wool and whatnot.

I have a '56 ford 800 tractor with a setup engine.........I may just get a couple jugs of the stuff and fill the cyl's with it. Maybe it'll work its way down a loosen things up so I don't have to totally disassemble the tractor this summer........will try that when it gets warm out.

Evaporust worked fairly well for me too. Used it to clean the big spots of rust inside my gas-tank and did a decent job. Much easier than using electrolsis from what I'v read. I still installed a filter between the tank and carbs for safety measure

Did you line the inside of the tank in any manner after you Evaporusted it?

I did not. I read about various other chemicals that may lead to more harsher treatments in which case you may want to do so. I should admit the evaporust did not clean the inside of my tank with a glorious amount of praise. I let it sit and sloshed it around after several hours if I recall, and overall could tell a difference, especially at how dirty the liquid was afterwords. But there are better treaments in regard to gas tank cleaning you may want to look into depending on a case by case situation and how much time you need/want to put into it

That would be to prevent the rust to come back, I'd say.

I only put a gallon of the stuff in. That isn't enough to cover the backbone. That's where the steel wool came in.

I left it overnight, and was quite happy with how it worked. The rust probably wasn't three inches deep, mind, but doing it this way beats the alternative.

See i figured on putting a gallon in, and then rotating it, leaving it sit overnight on each "angle" per say. so in the end result, all would be treated. I like the birdshot idea, ill add some of that as well so i can shake it up.

Question - what did you use to seal the petcock, fuel sender, and fill hole? just put everything in?

I did that as well. There's enough to cover the outsides, but even upside down, I still don't think there will be enough to cover the backbone. (I didn't try.)

Rubber sheet sandwiched by a wood piece, held in place by the original screws. Wasn't a perfect seal, but it worked well enough. Fill cap... I left that on. Honestly, as non-caustic as the stuff seems to be, I wonder if you could get away with leaving everything installed.

I'm seriously thinking about it - I'll take the filter off the petc0ck and then i should be good to go, im going to rebuild it afterwards anyway, so no worries there. I'll for sure post how it comes out!

Wait until you find out what it does to electrical systems. I spend every winter fixing corroded, brittle wiring, and electrical shorts caused by it.

Keep the stuff away from any electrical components (fuel tank sending units, wiring, switches, etc...)

thanks for the heads up on the electrical bit - deff going to figure out a way to protect the fuel sending unit now. perhaps wrap a rubber glove around it before putting it on.

i forgot about the fuel sending unit :( so i just went and drained it, took it out, cleaned it and blew off with some air. Thinking about what im going to do to seal this puppy up. looking around the garage and i know i have some thick plastic wrap that i used to cover my window on my truck when the motor went out :( but ill look around and see what i can rig up, ill let y'all know what i figure out,

edit - so when i drained the tank to plug up the fuel sender and petcock holes i found that in the 3 or 4 hours it was soaking the rust was already gone, in the cracks and crevasses it wasnt yet but mine wasnt that bad at all so im not to worried about it, i just have nothing to do to my bike since its at a shop getting two broken manifold bolts taken out of the jug :( i tried easy outing one and my easy out broke so i sent it in :(

but other wise this stuff kicks cancers ass!

    Heres what i did:

Went to lowes, and asked a guy in the lumber dept if there was any plywood that came damaged - and he brought me out a 4x3ft piece of 1/4" pressboard - works for me. Then picked up some 1/4" rubber

Made a template out of an index card, then traced to the pressboard, then cut it out:

    Then traced onto the rubber:

    andd.....

    Bingo. Petcock done:

Same for the fuel sending unit:

And there we have it - no leaks so far, so good to go there.

As for the gas cap - i diddnt grab a picture, but i just cut open and stretched a rubber glove i snagged from last weeks human phys lab over the inside of the cap so that the rubber gasket seals it tight around the opening, and thats also leak free.

Will let you know how it goes!

I was at Crappy Tire today and saw it on the shelf, but the price is not cheap, check it out.

Ten bucks a litre that's near fifty bucks a gallon, but cheaper than taking a chance on a used tank that you can't inspect yourself, like evil bay or Clist.
