Looks to me like maybe an XV535 virago, but sure someone will confirm or deny this for me. Hasn't he got the V5?

Must be the XV535, I don't think they made a smaller one til much later. That one's going to need a lot of work, wouldn't pay much for it.

How much is HE paying YOU to haul it away?
Second what O & B said, even a free bike is not free. From the pics it doesn't even look like a decent parts bike.

After looking at the pics more. The front end is slightly out of wack, the fork seals are done, old brake lines, it'll need a new fuse box, new tires, probably new brake pads, check the Mc and fix the front turn signal.
Early Viragos had known starter and tranny problems that will need to be addressed. So keep all that in mind when haggling over the price.

It's got a braided brake line already fitted, but it's still a shed of a bike & even that looks like it's seen better days...

Looks more like a 500 virago,

Not a bad bike but nothing like a 550 maxim (we're all biased here )

All depends on how much he wants for it, how much you want it, whether it will run etc. Last tax disc '00? been off the road 13 years!!! 8O should be able to apply for replacement V5 for £25

Just out of curiosity what part of England is the bike from? From the pictures posted it almost looks like it's been recovered from a flooded area, if it is then the insides could be a real mess.

Now you mention it, it does have that look about it. However with our weather just sitting outdoors can do that to a bike in 6 months in autumn/winter especially if it was put away with road salt on it (was last taxed till start of November 2000!

Cylinders look too big for the smaller V, looks like a 750. The front end def. looks like it was wrecked-it's tweaked and the fork tubes aren't lining up parallel. If you decide to buy it I would have a shop check it over first-might have a cracked/bent frame.

yes i thought it might be a tr1 or similar, but the blokes not got back to me about it yet, i've asked for the frame number so that should make things a little clearer..

as far as where its from .. .its been in a workshop for years, so i suspect the dirt is from there, but who knows until i see it?

Don't these motors have the CC cast into one of the jugs (like all other Yamahas) or just run the VIN on the 'Net. +1 on tweaked forks and this might not be worth getting, even for cheap.

First look and I saw it was a xv500. They have been sold over here in the early 80's but I think it's a bit like the Honda 500 shadow. These small engines don't make sense in a custom setup. Honda did the smart thing and also made a vt500e and the twin Ascot. Yamaha should have done the same :)

Besides that, "custom" bikes (can you really call it custom when build in large numbers?) suck in almost any way

Agreed. And I never knew there was a 500 virago before this thread, always thought the 535 was the "baby of the bunch"

Do what I did on mine. Get the VIN number and use one of the VIN verification sites on the web. I Googled Yamaha VIN check and found this site: http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vin/yamaha.asp Worked like a charm. I think it was Rick that put me on to this process.
