Is there suppose to be some kind of covers for the back of these brakes or is this normal? Oh, and what are those things sticking out of each caliper?

    Thanks

    Which bike is that?

Yes, there should be plastic covers. On some calipers they screw on, on those they appear as though they just snap on.

The things sticking out? You mean the bleed screws?

You need to replace those brake lines. Read this: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=41400.html

The sumitomo calipers were used on the xj700's, and no they did not use a cover over the pad clips.

Everything looks pretty normal there. I do agree with fitz about replacing the lines though.

I looked in the XJ900RK fiche; the calipers appeared to be very similar to those pictured and they have a snap-on cover; it appears to engage the slots that are visible in the pic.

I couldn't find any others that looked quite enough like the pic.

My xj750xn has the same calipers and there are plastic caps that go on there as dust caps. They just clip on.

Those Covers often just pop-off when you ride over railroad tracks.

The 900RK used the blender spoke wheels with single piston calipers. The wheel in the picture would be the 5 spoke used on the 85-86 XJ700's, and 84-85 XV700 virago with dual piston calipers.

The parts schematics do not show a dust cover used on the calipers. Wouldn't be the first time that a manufacturer used an unidentified part.

This is the best shot I have of the calipers caps of my Seca 900RK, my calipers are obviously not the same model as Heyitsme:

Could you check to see if there is a part number on those dust caps. They are also not shown in the parts schematic.

Mines a 85 700 so it looks like it had covers at some point then huh, but if it doesn't hurt to leve them how they are then that's what I'll do.
I didn't know the 5 spoke wheels only. Came on the 85 and 86's, I love these wheels! I'm in the proces of reprinting them too, I'll post a pic when I, done

ghost,, are you actually saying you have a parts fiche for the xj600 pre diversion, european model?? if so i would love to obtain a copy if thats posible.

and no there are no part numbers on the plastic covers, only a statement to remove them to check brakes, and the numbers 6.5 on the inside

It would probably be more productive to check with the manufacturer of the caliper. It would have been sold to Yamaha as as assembly, and probably was only stocked by Yamaha as the entire assembly, including the cover.

Man, ya beat me to it.

The only place I can find them, fiche-wise, is in the USA-model 900RK diagram. But who knows if they're the same? Len does, betcha.

Those Plastic Covers are a little bland.

I paint the Raises Lettering on them.
    Easy!

Put-on a Latex to Nitrile Exam Glove.
(Grab a few next time you go see the Doctor or Dentist)
Make sure the Index and Middle Fingers are pulled-on tight.

Place one drop of TESTORS Enamel Model Car or Railroad Paint on a 3X5 Card or Business Cars.
Spread the drop FLAT on the Card with a NEW Safety Razor.
Wait 45 seconds to one minute.

Using INDEX Finger, ... Roll finger on Paint in a "Fingerprinting maneuver"
Delicately ROLL your Finger across the Raised Lettering, ... transferring the Paint from your Gloved Fingertip to the Top edges of the Raised Letters.

Repeat as necessary until letters are nicely colored.

    Raised Letters on Instrument Cluster.
    New Number-2 Pencil.
    Cut Pencil in half.
Chuck the Eraser-end in your Drill so you can SCULPT the Eraser.
    Spin Eraser in Drill
Sculpt Eraser to a babies-butt smooth CONVEX Dome. (400 Grit Paper)
Smooth Convex Dome with 800 and 1000.

Same one drop Razor spread flat maneuver as stated above.
Touch ERASER's CONVEX Tip to the Paint on the Card.
Transfer Paint from Eraser Tip to tiny Raised Letters under Dash Lights.
Its better to use very little Paint several times, ... than try to do the Dash lights all at once.

Filling recessed letters. (Master Cylinder / Crank Covers.
Mask-off Letters with Black Electrical Tape'
(Rectangular perimeter ... NOT Individual Letters)
Pour Drop of Paint on Card
    Gloved Index Finger
    Collect whole drop.
Wipe Paint across recessed letters filling recesses spreading paint over complete masked-off area.

When Paint dries until tacky, ...
Wrap Index Finger with clean cotton T-shirt,
    Moisten T-shirt with Lacquer Thinner.
Touch finger tip to paper towel to absorb thinner so finger-tip is MOIST ... not Saturated.

Make ONE PASS over Painted recessed lettering, ... wiping-off surface of Paint within masked lettered.

    Reload!
Start with a fresh, clean section of Tee-shirt on finger.
    Thinner.
    Dab-off saturation 'til moist.
    Wipe!
    ONE PASS.

Repeat 'til masked area is wiped clean of paint not in the recessed lettering.

Beautifully done Mr Comatic. BTW is electrical tape your preferred masking off tape?

'Yes. Electrical Tape is a Custom Painters friend.

You mask-off "The line" with Vinyl, ... using it to create a non-bleeding, straight or curved line.

After creating The Edge with the Vinyl, .... regular masking tape gets laid-on the Vinyl along with paper or plastic sheeting.
