    interesting to help get ones head around the Wankel engine, and some of those steam engines I didn't even know existed!

    It's a deflector piston, very very old school design, at the time when they used all sorts of novel 2T ideas (like secondary charging pistons & rotary inlet valves etc.) Basically it's to set up a "knuerlhe scavenging loop" (spelling?), stopping the fresh charge from coming out the transfers and escaping straight down the exhaust port on overlap. Then along came Herr. Kaaden with his exhaust stuffing & the world you know today was born :D
