Today, after replacing my starter solenoid, I started up the 550 and took her around the block. When I pulled the clutch in (which I noticed cables starting to fray! Time for new cable!) there was a whining noise coming from by the front tire.

From what I could tell it seems to be the wheel bearings. The noise slowed down as the bike slowed, but stopped completely at and below 30mph. Hitting the brake had no effect on the noise so to me that ruled out the brake system (which is soon to be overhauled anyways).

All my wheel bearings were replaced when I replaced both tires, with parts from Len, May of last year. Bad wheel bearings? Incorrect install? Recommendations?

Check that and the speedo cable first. If the bearings weren't replaced You might as well do them while the wheel is off to clean and lube the speedo drive.

Give a quick shot of lube up into the speedometer through the cable orifice, noise will be no more.

Agree wth wizard. My 900RK was twisting and snapping speedo cables before I rebuilt the gauge cluster. A little bit of penetrating oil followed up with some graphite lube and all is good now.
You might want to take the 20 minutes and 5 cents worth of oil it takes to lubricate the speedo cable in sheath as well. I usually take some lucas synthetic and tape a funnel to one of the cable ends, pour about 20-30 ml of oil in the funnel and keep working the speedo cable until the oil runs out the other end. Nice and clean and slippery!
It's a rather disturbing when the speedometer starts jumping between 35 and 80 MPH. Took me a while to figure out the speedo cable was frayed/ binding and then spinning forward.

You know, I have been having that speedo issue as well. Only jumping between 45-50. I didn't even put those 2 issues together in my head. Makes sence now. I'm just glad to hear that is most likely the cause.

    Thanks guys, always helpful!!
