    hello all :)

Well i have a 84 550 which tends to make scary clicking noises upon start-up, On inspection i noticed a sprocket behind the clutch cover, on the below right side of the clutch plates housing & right behind the oil level glass (dont know what it's called considering the limited knowledge i have on xj's) which is literally movable in all directions with hand & im pretty sure that is what's kept the poor fellow from running for almost an year.

Upon close inspection, it seem's i'll need to split the cases but im not sure if i'll have to dis-mantle the machine completely or not, wondering if anyone know's what it is & how to get it fixed?

    thank's :)

Without a better idea of the thing in question I can give you this answer: almost everything you can see can be gotten to through this cover, at least it seemed to me when I put a new clutch in mine a couple of days ago. If you are talking of gear behind the clutch basket, then the basket is removeable. Yout can get the center bolt out by putting the bike in 5th and holding the rear brake. Just make sure you have a torque wrench as the bolts that hold the springs cannot have more or less than 86.2 INCH pounds of torque.

If you are unsure amazon.com has the haynes manual for this bike for 25$, get that and it will tell you all you should need to know.

If you get a name for your problem piece I will try to give you more advice,
    Stephen.
