    Hello everyone,

The neutral light on my 81 XJ650H started behaving strangely on a long road trip over the weekend and has been acting that way since.

The light will come on in all gears, but it flickers. When the bike is in neutral, the light is brighter and solid.

When I first start the bike, it does not do this. Not until the bike warms up for a while.

I was thinking that it could have something to do with the neutral switch in the gearbox, but a search in the forums indicated it may be an issue with alternator brushes? The thread I found about the alternator brushes didn't mention the light being on in all gears, just that it flickers.

My first thought is that you have worn through insulation somewhere and the light is coming on when the exposed wire comes into contact with the engine case, or a bare part of the frame. The clue is that the light is flickering. That may not be the trouble, but it's somewhere to start your troubleshooting.

Same thought here, although could also be a dodgy switch. I suppose the first place I'd look is the connector for the switch, I'd unplug it & see if the neutral light went out.

Also I'd check the switch wiring for chafing & use a multimeter to see if the switch is flaky
