After 3 speedo cables and a new drive cog i finally tracked down my always broken speedo issue, bent gear in the speedo itself.

and after looking into the price of a new Atari i decided its time to go.

I decided on a Acewell 3700 off of an ebay supplier.

I decided i didn't like the magnet style speed pick up. So i modified a Yamaha WR cable for the acewell to fit my original drive cog. i seen a quick pic of it from a user on here with a 650 but i cant remember who. basically break mounting bracket off old speedo cable and hose clamp it to the new cable. i used a PEX water pipe crimp connector as the clearances are so close between the anti dive, speedo cable and rotor mounting bolts.

i got everything working and mounted with some help from Polock and Ctureks atari removal instructions.

Good deal, what size resistor did you use? Do you still measure the circumference of the tire with that speedo setup ? I always used the magnet pickup.

i used 1.5 like you suggested seems pretty good, do you have your revolutions set to 0.5 or 1?

you still measure the wheel yes. still gotta go clock it and fine tune the size a bit i'm sure.

i set the clock in it the other day and saw revolutions was set to 1.
if you can get a nice clean cement floor, wet a q-tip, wipe it across the tire and get on it and roll it one revolution, get two wet marks on floor and measure.
can't be wrong, most speedometers read fast, yours will be right

i stuck the temp sensor on the cam chain tunnel with some epoxy/steel putty.
i'am sure it isn't right but it works as a reference. i get something like 270 F moving in the summer. if i remember right

I wonder if you could use the same technique to seal it into a drilled hex head bolt the same thread as the oil gallery ones & replace one of those with it to get a true oil temp reading (or maybe the same idea but sealed into the filter housing?)

Or even better, find an automotive sender unit with the same temp V resistance scale & tap threads into the oil filter housing...

i'am not sure there's anyplace thick enough to get enough threads in to make it secure, it would need 4 or 5 threads at least. i wouldn't trust anything held in with epoxy to hold in oil, a hole that big would be a catastrophe before you could shut down the engine.
if the oil temp did go up, what would cause it and what could i do about it ?

that's true, there may not be... Maybe if you found a sender with same threads as the gallery plug?

If the temp did go up, whatever the cause, you could shut down the motor before the oil thinned too much & the motor seized I suppose. But on balance, if that were at all likely then A: Yamaha would have fitted a gauge as standard & B: Not as many of us would be so pleased with our bikes 30 years down the line...

Just kinda "thinking aloud" about possible solutions to get a better reading than the camchain tunnel, but using my fingers on the keyboard instead of my vocal cords and your ears lol

fyi speedo setup if your using the stock drive cog with an S4 cable.

count number of rotation the stock cable does during one full rotation of the wheel

size of the wheel in mm's divided by number of rotations gives you the number you need.

if you do it the way they right it up in the manual you end up with a bike that does 300km/hr in first gear lol
