    I'm confused............

First you posted: "Who says u can't put a Harley tank on it"
    Then you posted: "I do"
    then you post pictures.................

I don't recall anyone saying you can't put a harley tank on an xj......I DO recall people saying you can't do it without a bit of work, and I recall people saying 'why would you WANT to"

What model Harley tank is it and what did you have to do to get it on?

Like the idea of having the gauges on the tank and the split tank but as for a harley tank on a Yamaha I think you would get a alot of flac from the die hard harley riders out there. As for the 'I do" I think he meant I do have pictures.

I like. Bigger tank, I'm guessing. Plus gauges, like Mike said. Pretty snazzy. Looks like a xj700 your doing that too.

eh, if other bikers don't like your work, they don't have to look at it =). I definitely see the worth of this conversion.

I think of that as being a desirable feature.
That tank looks bigger because of the split (it's two tanks with a center panel for gauges), but I think it actually holds less fuel than the original Yamaha tank.

The "piddly" size of the tanks on the X's and airheads are really the only downside that I can think of. The 20 litre tank on my Bandit is good for about 380 Km when ridden sensibly, my X (13 litre) was only good for about 180Km on a really good day (incl res, both bikes)

Scooter1968, Looking good. I'm about half skeered to post a pick of mine now. I'm putting 5 gal. fatbobs on it. I'm not a Harley wannabee, I just like the xtra go juice and the look. The factory edge just looks.... unfinished or something to me.

Actually it is one tank. The tank is a 06 Dyna wide glide 5 gallon tank. The mod was pretty simple. Just cut the backbone above the t where the two smaller side bars are welded and add a new piece of tubing to the back bone down to the seat. You have to remove the two smaller tubes cometely. Drill a hole on each side of the neck and weld a nut on each side. I paid 100 bucks for the tank and 3 bucks for the tubing. The bottom of the tank bolts in the same place as the original tank. And the seat still fits as it did with the factory tank. Next thing I'm going to do is have the risers machined off and add t bars. As far as the die hard Harley riders who cares. I'm building the bike the way I want it. Its just a tank. It doesn't say Harley and never will

Well of coarse it fits if you mod the backbone, any tank will fit after that.
Modding the backbone isn't considered an easy mod because most people don't know how to weld or have access to a welding machine. At least you knew that the backbone would need to be reinforced after cutting away the outer 2 pieces.
BTW: A V-Star 650 tank will go on with little trouble. 4 gallons and a center console, but it is a little wide at the seat.

This is true. Never really understood the concept of stopping the backbone halfway and adding the two smaller tubes outside.

I realize that a sideways mounted motor requires more frame stability, but I think they could've used a large single backbone with a few strategically placed gussets. But when it comes to building costs and what material they have on hand, slap a couple of bars on there.

Hey Scooter, did you have any trouble with the coils? I put a 4" wide gusset on mine and it didn't leave enough room to mount them end to end like I wanted and side to side is @ 3 1/2". So I was wondering if you had to mount the tank a little higher, did it fit OK, or what?

    edit for spelling

I welded a smal plate under the new backbone and mounter them on it above the engine

If you are referring to the one at the neck I cut those out. And welded new steel plate gussets to allow clearance.

Yeah, I cut it all out too. I put in a 1/4' gusset between the backbone and brace and another 1/4" gusset from the horn mounts to the neck tube. I put 2 mounts for the coils between the new backbone and brace, but I'm a little under the weather right now so I haven't checked the tank fit yet.

I'm trying to clean it all up as far as the welds and plates. I want it all clean looking when I get thru as any custom should be
