last season i was pretty annoyed by that clickety clackety tap tap tap type sound while sitting on the bike and riding, and i had read a few threads mentioning how once the valves are in spec, that can clear up and man were they right! the sound now is totally tolerable and quite nice. a much more uniform sound, and it really makes the ride more enjoyable.

just thought id share that. it really bugged me before.

going to post a build thread shortly. had the bike out 2 times only and have had people both rides just gushing over it. so thats pretty sweet.

Now that's weird! I've always been told that noisy valves are happy valves and that you should start to worry when you don't hear them anymore...

Hmm..well if you don't hear a nice rhythmic tapping noise that is clearly coming from the tappets hitting the shims as they rotate into contact, then they are either touching all the time and are critically tight or your engine isn't running. On the other hand if you hear a 'clackity clack' sound and it isn't very rhythmic that's a whole other issue which is leading to whole host of painful outcomes. 8O

It goes without saying that XJ motors aren't quiet, but it is also true that a poorly maintained XJ motor will be far noisier than normal.

no, i mean its not as annoying sounding. it used to be really loud and quite a crappy tone to deal with, whereas now its evened out, more tight sounding (more rhythmic you could say) and overall creates a much much more enjoyable ride. it def still has that sound its just considerably better now :)

been too busy riding! but its going to be raining/SNOWING for the next few days so it should be a good time to do it

Perhaps you released gremlins when you opened the cover ;)

My clicks are very uniform since I corrected my clearances, but I can't remember anything loud about the engine before. I wasn't listening them.

Just know that it now sounds smooth.
