Hello all. I'm having a problem with my 1982 XJ750 Maxim. I've had it for about 3 years, it just turned 24k miles.

At the end of last season in 1st and 2nd gear whenever I hit 4500-5000rpm I'd lose all acceleration and the bike would rev extremely fast like it was in neutral, the second I let off the throttle it'd be fine and I could give it gas again. This all happens without ever touching the clutch lever or shifter, just the throttle.

    3rd, 4th, and 5th I can run to 9k without a hitch.

I thought it was the clutch slipping, but I just replaced the entire clutch, bolts, washers, friction and steel discs, and springs. And it's still doing the exact same thing.

I run valvoline 20w/50 motorcycles oil and Napa filters.
Neutral is easy to find, it shifts through all gears fine.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Not sure how similar the 750 clutch is to my 550 or if the 750 even has it. But, if your bike has a "boss" disc I believe it is, are you positive it is in the correct spot? My 550 did this too when I had the boss disc in the wrong spot. Maybe you fixed the clutch slip from a worn clutch but caused the same problem with incorrect install.

bigfitz52 has a write up on replacing the church which is extremely helpful but I cannot find it right now.

I may be wrong, but anyways, welcome to the community.

Clutch slipping is mostly felt in higher gears and not in 1st and 2nd. Is there any noise when it happens?

The 650/750/900s don't have the clutch boss spring w/special friction disc.

My first thought would be to be sure you have the correct number of plain and friction plates; but I'm at a loss. POPPING OUT of gear is different from slippage that can be "modulated away" with only the use of the throttle; the symptoms just don't add up.

My bike pops out of second if I hit around 5 k and I promise you I have had it pop back in a few times once I lay off the throttle. Not everytime though.
