First time posting I hope am in the right place.

I have a 1982 xj maxim got it for project 2 years ago.
I haven't really been into the project until now.

When I got the bike it didn't start at all. I was told all I needed was the cdi well I got a good one from eBay and finally got it to start but rough idle, so I stripped it, went with simple wiring diagram. Just ignition with no lights at all just to start. Well I been in this situation for a while now. Checked all wires all ok. Checked coils and pick up coil all checks ok with ohms and according to book. So I went backwards. And put the old harness back on and still everything tested ok BUT now I have no neutral the light does not come on. I do get the oil light blink when I push to start. I have put a meter to it, one lead to the head screw under the engine and other to ground It shows open, when on gear still shows open. Would that be the reason am not getting this bike started? Please help. I wanna ride this classic bike!!!

Just to clear up. I have checked the start relay and kick stand relay I have even bypass the relays but still no spark or start. And yes the kick stand is up and I have try to pull the clutch and put it on gear to start but still nothing.

Fuses seen in good shape I also clean them just in case. I just cleaned and te tested neutral and still same. I wonder if the neutral switch being bad it won't let me start it even in gear. Any ideas??

Does the neutral light ever come on?

If not, unplug the safety relay as a troubleshooting aid.

Does it turn over at all, or simply nothing?

If not, unplug the safety relay as a troubleshooting aid.

Will the starter spin if you jump the two big terminals on the solenoid?

If not, it has nothing to do with the safety circuit and you have bigger problems to figure out.

No neutral light at all. If I push the start button it will crank, turn but still nothing, even the oil light will blink. Am not getting a spark at all. I have replaced the cdi box.
