I haven't seen any soft XJ650 saddlebags that really blow my hair back. I'm thinking about ordering a pair of these, painting 'em gloss black, & mounting 'em. Why I like 'em:
. They are end-hinged - great for grabbing something at a stoplight.
. I wouldn't have to move the rear turn signals.
    . Under $20 for 2 - shipped!
    . Lightweight.

You'd nudge me if I were nuts, right?

Unfortunately that ammo can is both flimsy, and smaller on the inside than on the outside (an anti-TARDIS of sorts). You can get a pair of 50 cal ammo cans for not much more than that if you shop around; they are both bigger, and sturdier. If you want to go big, then shop around for mermite cans. They need to be worked on a little, but make excellent panniers.
If you just want to stash small/ lightweight items (as (and are light for their size) opposed to packing for an overnight) what you linked should work out fine.

These are bigger. Here's another good option.

I believe Plano also makes larger boxes. I've been looking around and it appears there are plenty of options of the plastic waterproof box variety.

I was going to go the metal ammo can route, but they're f@$king heavy and I don't want to have to account for that much weight on the bike.

You could go really crazy like the kids on advrider do:

    ADV bullet can build

There are about 10 threads on guys getting creative with cans, boxes, crates, and likely old fridges.

    Thanks, Spinalator.
Those are manly men over there - all knobbies & tank bags! (And I totally dig it.)
