Hi all, I need to replace the clutch and cable on my 1982 XJ650J Maxim. I have never had the clutch of a bike opened up before, so really need some guidance here. I have done clutch jobs on cars and trucks, but never a bike.

My confusion lies in what to order? What do I need? I messaged Chacal and was sent a copy and paste of the text in the catalog that had already confused me.

Compression springs, shaft bearings, clevis bracket, pivot axle, it's like reading Chinese for me.. I am fairly mechanically inclined, I have no doubts at all that this job will go quick and smooth, I just don't know what I all need..

Could one of your every helpful guys(gals?) get me some catalog numbers or a list of what I need? I would like to place an order with Chacal as soon as possible, like today if I can find out what I need, so any help will me GREATLY appreciated!

You probably only need new friction plates, springs and a gasket. If replacing the cable, I'd recommend an OEM one.

Here's a clutch "how to" but there's good news: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html

The "how to" was done on a 550, which has a bit more complex clutch than your bike. Your bike will NOT have a special friction disc w/clutch boss spring, nor will it have "tabbed" plain plates to worry about. Yours is just a stack of friction plates and plain plates.

The other salient points of the article still apply.

Thanks for the reply!! Friction plates, springs, gasket, got it. I'll hit the catalog now and return here if I get stumped again lol.

So thankful that that was a short list of things I most likely need lol.

    thx man!!

That assumes that your friction plates aren't burnt or warped and can be simply cleaned up with Scotchbrite (which is usually the case.) You also need to examine the basket and hub for "divots" from the plates; this is all explained in my article.

When you contact Chacal he will list all the things you need and more! Don't stress just get an order away. Len will look after everything from there...GUARANTEED!

This week is pretty tight, but next week I should have a bunch of free time.

    When works good for you?

Oh and I now remember you wanting to do something about your fork springs, so if you ordered those up, we could swap those in as well.

I actually already made a deal with a guy at a local shop here, he's gonna do my forks for me, I just gotta pull em off and bring them in.

I'll keep in touch with ya, we have a baby due so it all depends when that happens, but thanks again for the offer to help and I WILL take ya up on it!

Hey, Len is a good guy. I've PM'd him on several occations explaining what needs to be done and asked that I have no clue on the parts needed, and he's really helped me each time.... Trust me, nothing sucks like making a huge part order, tearing into a weekend job, and finding out you missed a damn gasket or o ring....

mtnbikecrazy55, I am giving the clutch a go on my own. Watched a few videos and did some reading on here and in the Haynes manual, I don't think I'll have any issues. But I would still like to get together with ya at some point for valve clearances and whatever else comes up by then lol.
