A buddy of mine ishaving issues with his foot brake, it either rides way high or goes way low if he tries to adjust the lever itself. Any thoughts? Possibly something with how the spring runs?

Are the markings on the brake pedal and the pivot shaft lined up? If they are, and the pedal still goes too far down, your brakes are probably worn out or out of adjustment. Have the brake shoes been inspected? How old are they? Old shoes tend to delaminate and could cause a crash. Visually inspect the shoes.

There is an "upstop" adjuster for the pedal; it's behind the rear footpeg bracket so it's not obvious. It's a small bolt with a locknut that you use to adjust the "up" position of the pedal.

MORE IMPORTANTLY: ZH's warning about the rear brake shoes. If he's got a lining broken loose and sliding around in there it's a crash looking for a scene. The shoe have to be visually inspected; read this: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html
