I'm just wondering what people are getting for gas mileage? It really doesn't bother my what it is because i just enjoy the ride, but i want to see how my bike compares.

Also is there any way to use a gas gauge on an 81 xj550? or a mileage gauge?

    52+ on mostly rural roads.
And, yes - I tend to ride like your grandfather (but with intermittent bursts of throttle/testosterone). There's something very attractive about the Maxim's high-RPM, "jet on runway" vocal signature.

I get on average 40-45 mpg with my 83 xj750mk. However I always ride it like I stole it. The only time the RPMs drop below 5k is when I come to a stop. :-D

I have the same bike ('81 xj550 maxim) jchalo99, and get anywhere from 50~53 mpg on rural roads as well. Its not as high in the city obviously, however, one time in the hills of southeastern Ohio I got over 60+ because of coasting a lot I think.

cdilmore clearly read my mind with his last sentence. these bikes have a great ride to them once you give 'em a chance & they run properly.

so my 40mpg isn't bad, but needs improving. i am starting maintenance that has been forgotten by previous owner, so that should help alot. but i completely understand the "jet on runway" explanation, i couldn't figure out a way to describe the sound to my mother, but that is it.

    52 ~ 56mpg for a properly tuned, stock 550.

50 mpg all the time on my stock XJ750 Maxim. Just did 500 miles over the weekend and the only time it dropped to 47 mpg was when the riding got a little "spirited".
