My XJ is acting up. When I hit the start button I hear the relay under the tank click but the starter doesn't go. In this condition jumping the solenoid does nothing-no power.
If I put the bike in 2nd gear and move a little bit(turning the motor) It will then start. It will also push start.
The cut-off relay and side stand relay check out ok.
    Any ideas?

Does battery check OK? could be dead or going.

Brushes comes to mind, but i'll let someone else chime in on that.

It could be a sort of dead spot in the starter, I had a similar issue with my old Goldwing, I had the starter checked and rebuilt, worked fine after.

I would open the starter and clean it thoroughly first. It could be full of carbon dust in there.

After switches and relays checked good and the soleniod passed, I pulled the starter and cleaned it up.
Brushes are still in spec and now the bike starts fine.

    Thanks for the ideas
