    I'm looking for a service manual for my 1982 XJ650 Maxim.

    I found a PDF for an XJ650G but not maxim. Are they one and the same?

    XJ650G would be a 1980 Maxim. Mostly the same, but there are some key differences, 82 has YICS and electronic tach 80 has no YICS and I believe a cable driven tach. Might be more differences that someone else will post....

    FYI Yamaha XJ dates/models:
    80=G
    81=H
    82=J (they skipped 'I')
    83=K

    Maybe.

    If yours is truly an '82, you have a "J." Or is it a "K" made in '82? Yamaha didn't actually build any USA-market XJs in '83 that I know of. See: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html only your VIN knows the truth. Decode away.

    The factory "base" manual was for the 650G. All the others, including the similarly non-YICS 650 Seca and later, YICS-engined Maxims, were covered by supplements. Except for the Seca, there is very little in those supplements other than specification differences.

    Yamaha did publish retail, bound versions of a manual for the '82/83 650 Maxims; it will include the base book plus applicable supplements. These can occasionally be found on eBay. Be careful with eBay manuals, quite often the supplements are listed as though they are complete manuals and we've had members who weren't pleased with how that turned out.

    The Haynes 650/750 book is also quite popular, but it does contain a couple of rather infamous, glaring mistakes. (Mis-located jets, wrong valve clearances for the 650 Seca, etc.)

    Best bet is a factory book plus the Haynes. And this site.

    Awesome, thanks once again :)

    Sooooo my bike doesn't have an electronic tach. It's got a needle...

    Or am I not understanding what electronic tach is?

    This forum beats any book out there I think :) I did buy the haynes, but they don't even tell you how to do an oil change in that one!

    The tachs look the same. Difference is in how they receive the signal.

    All the tach's have needles. That's what points to the numbers. If yours is an 82, then you have an electronic tach. Simplest way to tell is to look at the back of the tach. If there is a bunch of wires coming out of the bottom of it, it's electronic. If there's a cable like a speedometer cable coming out of the back of it, it's a cable- driven tach. The cable ones are the earlier ones, not the later ones like you have.

    Ok gotcha. I'll check it out in the morning. I'm assuming it should be electronic since it's an 82.

    Dave, holy crap that's a lot of bikes!!!

    You should see his snowmobile collection!

    And on a serious note, be careful with ebay manuals.... I paid nearly $100 for a factory manual - and got a PDF on a CD - ebay didn't do crap either because "the post never specified it was a book!"

    That is an electronic tach.

    The J/K supplement to the XJ650G service manual has the following changes:

    - Air assist front forks
    - Electronic tach
    - Addition of side stand cut of circuit
    - Automatic cam chain tensioner
    - Synchronizing the YICS system
