I just went and picked up a xj700 today. Paid 650.00 for her with title. It is going to take some work and some parts location but I believe it will look and ride great when done. It needs forks and maybe the top brace. Front lights, maybefront fender, front axle maybe. Things seem to be tweeked a bit in the front. Tank has two dents on top but spotless on the inside. I will see If I can get the dents out, Throttle is stuck, I believe the butterflies in the carbs to be stuck. I also do need the left brake caliper and hose as this one is missing. It has both the rotors and only one caliper. Wierd.
The good. 8551 original miles on it. Engine turns over and seats are in good shape. He even through in a slipstreamer windscreen and mount. Looks to be new. It will need a lot of elbow grease. Should be fun to see it all come together. I will see if I can post some pics in my gallery. I feel like a little kid that just opened his chrismas presents. COOOOL

Give me a shout. I think I can help you out with most of your parts. Shame you don't live closer. I believe I even have another front fender.

The front fender I have is a little bent and has one dent in it as I can see under the layer of grease on it. I will let you know on it. I may need a set of tripples also. I will find out later on today. Only took a year to find a xj700. At least at a resonable price. I dont mind doing the work on them. It gets me out of the house. Going to try and fire her up this afternoon. So at least I know if it runs well. Then off come the carbs for a good cleaning.

Cleaned the carbs yesterday and got her running. Just need to color tune and sync now. Runs rather well, Engine is nice and tight. Next thing will be stripping off the front end to find out why it is twisted. I loosened up the front fender and that seemes to help straighten things out a bit. Thats another day though. Pics of the carbs in my gallery if you need to see carbs broken down.
Thsi will be a work in progress and I will probably update daily. Progress is good. It like the biker build off around here.

The saga continues. I tore down the tripples today. Lower is bent. And I cant see a way to brnd it back so new ones are in order. Also took the gauges apart to satisfy my curiosityand discovered what I all ready knew had happened. The previous owner had taken the speedometer appart and broken the plastic retainer for the trip meter. And the back retainer for the cover on the tach. I repaired the tach with some body pannel adhesive.(great stuff, found at body shops). Now I just have to figure out why the tach needle doesn't move. Thread started. The speedometer, I wll need parts for or find another one as the crome ring has now been off twice and looks like crap. That will be fun. I also got some seafoam run through the carbs. Tomorrow- new plugs-colortune-sync. Stay tuned and find out how this build goes. Hopefully in about two weeks I will be riding it.

    samsr,
I have a set of straight forks off a 86 XJ700, seals need to be replaced though, I believe I still have the front axle as well as some other misc. parts.....straight frame with clear title & the engine minus carbs & starter. Engine was running strong when I took it out last summer, fogged it & blocked off the intake & exhaust & been in my garage ever since. let me know & good luck!

I just finished rebuilding the front forks, Not a bad job once you fab the special tool. I didn't realize the yamaha didn't polish much of the down tubes. They will be polished when I get done though. MAX-X I could use the lower bracket for the triples as mine is bent. I was told that the previous owner hit a mailbox with it. I can believe that by the way the front end looked. Well this ends this chapter. Hopefully more work tomorrow.

First thing is remove part and spray down with Paint stripper. Get all that old nasty clearcoat off. Then wet sand the rough spots with 1000 grit wet sand paper and water. You may need to start with something closer to 400 for those nasty scratches. Water is a must at this point to keep the paper from gumming up. Then to the buffing wheel You go. I use sticks of rough. You can get the rough and the buffing wheel at Grainger. I think it was about 9.00 for the rough (4 sticks) and 12.00 for the buffing wheel. I use the buffing wheel on my die grinder. Check the arbor size on what you are going to use to make sure you get the right wheel. I used the gray rough. Using the wheel and the rough buff the offensive part out until there is a good shine. All most a mirror surface. Keep a little bit of moisture on the part while buffing. Spray bottle with water in it works fine. Then wipe the part down with a t-shirt. I then finish it with Mothers billet polish with a t-shirt. Makes a nice shine. If I do say so myself.

    Happy polishing

Just an update on the story. since I last posted, I have rebuilt the calipers, polished, installed new stailess brake lines, polished, bled brake system(thank you mighty-vac) Polished some more, Replaced speedomter, polishedeven more, Installed new front turn signals, continued to polish, Installed lower tripple tree from a 85 Virago, Yes they fit nicely. Polished upper tripple clamp. Polished the cases.
replaced the original spark plugs.(this made a big difference). Synced carbs. Installed fuel filter and new fuel line. Also new vacuum line. I got to ride her for the first time. LOTS OF POWER. She runs reeeeeel gooooood. Now I get to dismantle her and get her ready for paint. Hopefull I can paint her next week. Small amount of filler work to do to the tank, But I managed to get most of the dent out of it. Compressed air and a body hammer work wonders. Now I just need to get some of the back out of the seat. It should be easy to take the cover off and take some foam out near the back. Pics will be up soon. Then maybe you can tell me what kind of bars these are. Seem like dear bars to me but not straight.

Edit, Pics added. let me know what you think so far

dont have the 4 into 1 on the 700. Just the 750. Works pretty well on the 750. Sounds pretty good. I wil post some pics when I get the painting done. Probably the end of next week. On a good note, I just got back from a nice ride and dinner with the wife. We put 80 miles on the 700. Ran like a champ except for one thing. Went to hit the fron brakes and, Nothing was there. I glanced to the left everything was there. Glanced to the right and looked around. OK who stole the right side caliper. It was dangling by the brake line. It fell off. Glad I put the tool kit in her. I took out the upper bolt on the left side and put it in the lower side of theright side caliper. Then went to Pep-Boys to get some bolts, Luckuly it was anly a block or so away. Put new bolts in her and away we went. Twas a nice ride. I love it when a plan comes together.

whoa 8O ! yea its a good idea to check your bolts..I am torquing mine down, but I still check them several times. Just set my torque wrench and give them a tug if it clicks on the proper ft.lbs its all good. you are torqueing your bolts down right?

Forgot to mention I remolded the seat foam. I am only 5'10, 180 pounds, but I still found the seat a bit restrictive. The seat wanted to push me forward into a position that I found was too far forward. Hard to shift for me. Guess I dont bend that way any more. Any way with a screwdriver I removed the staples took the cover off and went to town on the back of the seat. A die grinder works great but makes a big mess. I took off about an inch and a half to two inches off the back and transitioned it to be level with the base of the seat. So as to keep the stock seat appearance. I then pulled the cover tight again and stapled it back to the pan again. Now I have more room and dont sit so far forward on it. Very simple mod and took about half an hour to do. Comfort is a good thing. Next mod needs to be forward controls though.

Samsr, I thought of doing the same thing as I find myself pushing myself backwards, almost ending up on the rear edge of the seat when I´m driving (also wouldn´t mind sitting an inch or 2 lower). Could you provide a couple of pics of your seat-mod?

got her put together. What do you think. I still need to find a matching mirror. One like the one on the right. And a little more cleaning up, but other than that she appears to be DONE. One last thing. Can anyone Identify the bars on this bike. Uncomfortable to say the least. Within 5 minutes my hands are asleep. I would like to replace them with something closer to stock. A little taller. New grips too. But that is small stuff. Take a look and let me know what you think.
