IF you buy pods.. don't buy.. the ones that have a metal cap/end on them.
These have been proven to remove horsepower.. not good.

Has anyone had any experience with the foam ones from J.C Whitney. I am fixing to remove my air box and install some. I can't bring myself to pay for a set of K&N's with as many miles as I have and then needing to rejet the carbs. I just don't think it is financially sound.

I don't know about those pods removing horsepower, but I do know that tuning our XJs with any pods installed can be a nightmare. Some have found success after lots of trouble re-jetting and tuning, but most wish their bikes were back the way they started.

Our bikes are extremely fine-tuned with the factory setup.

You'll have to rejet no matter what filters you use if you remove the air box and go to pods. Pods allow a lot more air into the carbs - more air requires more fuel - meaning a rejet.

Plus, unequal airflow in the form of more air, and not increased exhaust flow, means you rejet to make it run, but do not reap many of the benifits of more air and jetting.

I used a K+N filter and cut the airbox around the filter so the mounting points held the filter in place. The total element is out the open which feeds to the factory manifold. I went up 2 main jet sizes and one pilot size due to having a four into one exhaust also. I also ported my cylinder head also(what a difference).
