    This is for the Petcock.

This is how not to do a gas cap. Oh poop!

Like most of my how-tos, they're not PDF's.

Look in "XJ FAQ Suggestions" for not only the petrorooster resurrection article, but valve adjustments parts I and II, tach drive oil seals, rear wheel bearings (550 specific but with shaftie info too) and other good stuff. Since I ride 550s, most of them were done using a 550, but the info does apply to the rest of the "family" too.

I foolishly expected that solid "faq suggestions" would somehow make it to "XJ FAQ Final" but alas, such is not to be.

before i start digging into this petcock.... maybe u can tell me if my judgement was correct... if i turn it on PRI gas just runs out till tank is empty... if i turn it to on.... no gas come out when trying to start it... maybe think is the seal in the middle better known as the diaphram i think??.... or not good enough vacume?? ... opinions??

    The way it works is:

PRI flows, period. Bypasses the vacuum.

ON and RES are vacuum-dependent. The bike (well, if everything is operating correctly) should have enough fuel already in the system to fire up. Once it fires up, it supplies enough vacuum to operate the petcock.

No, you won't see gushes of fuel when just cranking. Cranking doesn't produce anywhere NEAR the required strength and quantity of vacuum pulses for the system to function. That's why we have "PRI." For those times (like after sitting for a couple days or longer) that there isn't enough fuel in the system to do the trick until the petcock "comes on-line."

Before you "dig into it" READ the article I did on them. Don't just skim it and look at the pics, read it carefully. How it works, why they often don't, what can and can't be done to fix it--- it's in there. I put hours and hours worth of work into choosing exactly the right words to use to keep the text to a minimum but yet provide all of the necessary information...

and I swear everybody just looks at the pictures and then asks the questions that are answered in the text.

Read the piece; save me some typing already. I have two rebuilt petcocks that I trust implicitly, you can too IF yours is rebuildable. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=25058.html

The other option is an On/Off valve, save yourself the trouble of rebuilding your old one! Len has em for 40 bucks :)

And yea, Fitz's tutorials are amazing! He helped me tremendously with checking my valve shims this past weekend!

Dude, seriously? Nothing beats a properly functioning vac-op petcock. You put the key in and start the bike, period. You shut it off and go in the restaurant. No gasoline-ey fingers. I've lived that with my Norton for over 40 years; I LIKE not having to worry or even think about it.

(Assuming your floats are correctly adjusted too.)

Rebuilding's only "trouble" if this whole process is no fun for you. I prefer successful refurbishing over replacing whenever possible.

Oh, and thanks by the way.

Haha, you're welcome! I just don't have the space or the tools that you have to successfully rebuild my petcock. I read your petcock tutorial 3 times and I just don't have the means to do what you did (which was awesome by the way) I'll save my old petcock should I ever own a house with a garage and some decent tools but yea, for now its on/off. I feel the on/off crap is better than flooding my carbs 100% of the time :)

I saw a brand new, aftermarket for an xs1100 for $10 on ebay a couple weeks a go. You might try looking there.
